Edmonton,
My CV Boots are torn and my CV joints are clicking on both the front left and front right. I am planning to just buy new axles but I don't have the money at the moment. How dangerous is it to continue driving my car like this? It doesnt seem to be getting worse and it's been clicking for a couple of months. Can I hold off another month? I don't drive the car too much, just to work and back and for weekend cruises/meets. I just don't want a wheel to collapse or something crazy like that.

Take your axle's out and regreese em, then stick the boots back on with a new clamp. But do eventually replace your axles. They are about $90 at carquest.

Am I right to assume that a new axle will also come with the joints and boots?

All I can say is wow :toobad:

With the boot ruptured the CV joint will go bad quickly as the grease escapes and contaminants (water/dirt) get in. New boots wont help you at this point. Had you noticed the grease splattered on each side of the car/wheels you'd of only been out $40 for a boot kit.

If (when) the joint goes it can cause damage to the surrounding area and possible loss of control of the vehicle.

Nope unfortunately I never noticed the grease, just the clicking, already too late. I don't take the wheels off very often either. Shit happens.

Weird thing, I took both my front wheels off today to redo my brakes. The boots look fine and I don't see any grease?! WTF Can the CV joints just so bad even without a ripped boot, or could the turning/clicking be caused by seomething else?

So which is it, either the boots are torn as in your first post or they're not as in your last. There are two cv joints/boots per axle so make sure to check both. If one (or more) is torn, then the joints are likely shot unless caught early on.

DSM90AWD,

I was under the assumption that the boots were already torn based on the symptoms, my bad. Neither inner or outer appear to be torn and I couldnt feel any tears on the underside of them.

hey how much horsepower are you pushing cause ive had problems with the cv joints and drive axles breaking under high horsepower. i never found reinforced cv joints or drive axles to keep that from happening and i wasnt sure at first if that was the problem until i put new stock ones on and those broke to. if anyone knows where to find some reinforced ones please let me know. this may not be the answer to your problems but you might give it some thought

My ball joint just went on my talon while I was driving. Balljoint went which tore my halfshaft (cv axle). I tried to replace my cv joint but the shaft was stuck in the hub bearing so hard that a 20 ton press couldnt get it out.

So instead of paying the 70 bucks for a new ball joint, I got to buy the joint + the cv axle (which didnt come with abs even though it was supposed to) + a hub bearing..
I wouldnt do it again.

And I was lucky because I was only going 5 miles an hour or else it would have destroyed my rim and more.

As most said already, it is very unlikely that would cause damage when the cv joint does decide to poop on you. I have went through many axles. 3 on one DSM within a month until I found the crossmember was bent due to the previous owner putting the car in a ditch and neglected to tell me.

First time the axle popped out, you just can't move if you are FWD. It's like the tranny shifting to neutral. Thus leaving you stranded and have to get the car towed.

Ball joints are a completely different story. When they go, your wheel collapses and can be very dangerous. But just an axle won't do anything.

So, you're asking questions about modding a car that you no longer own?

You shouldn't be toasting CV shafts at 480 HP either. At least, not unless you launch from every stop and you still have a 3-bolt rear.

im not asking about modding a car i no longer own ive got a 99 gsx now that im modding and dont want the same to happen to it so needed advice on where to get the parts as for the cv joints breaking under that hp the car was a 96 gsx with 130,000 miles on it and my 99 has 97000 on it so id rather just get the reinforced parts and not worry about it anymore besides im gonna be pushing alot more hp outa this one
