CV Boot question

My outer CV boots are torn and need replacing. The inners look ok. Should I replace the inner boots since I have the axles out or is it not necessary since they are still sealed? I would rather not do more work than necessary.

I would suggest replacing the entire halfshaft since you have it all out anyway. They really don't cost that much more. Especially since your car is 10 years old, it may not be a bad idea to go ahead and do that.

It was a PITA for me to replace the inner boot so after 1.5 months of being on jackstands, i took it to Satan and paid $300 for the whole halfshaft to be replaced.

This is what you'll be needing:

boot (2 pcs) - $30
grease (mobil 1) - $6
32mm socket $15
boot ring crimper $10
cotter pin - $0.50
can of brake cleaner/degrease - $4

If you have air tools, the better. That 32mm castle nut is hard to take off. Use PB Blaster the night before you plan on doing the job.

I found it hard to take off the steering rod knuckle, seems like you need a tool for it. i have the pitch fork, but i could not lift it off without damaging the rubber boot. good luck!

I'm actually most of the way there. The axles are already out (we're replacing the transmission because of a big hole in the transaxle!) so it's just a matter of doing it. PB Blaster is definitely good stuff!
