Cutting stock springs

Any 2" drop sucks on stock/ kyb sturts.

Huh? What? Have you ever rode on a name brand spring with KYB shocks? Probably not. I have Eibach Sportlines > 2" drop with KYB GR2 shocks and the ride is great. No complaints at all.

here's my story:

Previous owner cut my stock springs, the car dropped maybe 2 to 2.5 inches...in turn the stock shocks blew out cause they werent able to handle the added pressure of the car/weight.

How did i know they were blown? Cause i took one off and could compress it BY HAND!

Whats it like driving around on cut springs and blown shocks? Well imagine your in a car with hydraulics... every time you hit s dip or bump in the road your car bounces up and down for like 30 feet and look like and idiot, not to mention if you hit a big enough bump or dip in the road, the front end of your car smacks the ground and you can hear your down pipe, bumper and even the oil pan scrape.

That was my experience. PLEASE don't cut your springs, like everyone is saying, save up some money and get at least a cheap set of struts/coilovers...that would be better than heated and hacked springs IMHO.

It makes me sad to see that people actually still try this crap.:(
At any rate, unless you have kyb agxs, you shouldnt put on the gr2s with a lowering spring. They are stock replacements and arnt made for lowered cars/I dont care how many of you will argue and say you have them and they handle greats.ave it.You obviously havent had a real suspension setup and therefore dont have a real good outlook. You shouldnt be modding your car if your "too broke and unemployed" to afford real parts. Doing it half assed is not only a waste f money, its dangerous and you look like a fg doing it.Just save up a few hundred and do it right...agx shocks or equilivant (i run illuminas) and a good spring (i got teins and love them).

I can't believe we allow this type of thread on these forums... This is dsmTUNERS.com not dsmHACKERS.com. Do it right or dont do it at all.

There is no right way to cut springs. Race cars with cut springs is total rubbish. There is no way I would ever do 150+ mph on cut stock springs, you are insane. I hate seeing DSM's all hacked up and in the junkyard (mind you it saves me coin on some parts that I may need). Have fun and do it right, if you are broke and unemployed, you need to pray nothing breaks, not give it a reason to.

Wow, you have got to retarded. Do you not think I have been working on cars since before I could I could drive. I have installed just about every spring/shock combo in the book, on a multitude of cars. And yes I bought the sportline/gr2 combo. Why? Because they sell those shocks with lowering spring packages. Also, I dont need an adjustable shock. Thats just a waste to me. I have been running this combo for 3 years and 25000 miles. And they perform and ride flawlessly, just like they day they were installed. When people ask me what shock to run with springs, I always suggest ATLEAST the GR2. But if they feel they need an adjustable shock, I tell them to get an adjustable shock.

When I suggest parts and products to people, I only suggest things that I have had first hand experience. LIKE THESE SHOCKS. I dont just say, "I read on the internet those are bad". No, thats stupid.

Yeah, I have megans and gr-2's.

A long time ago I put stock no name shocks on ebay suspension and it lasted over 2 years no problem.

But we are not up to that guys ability I guess.

Well, come to Mid America Motorplex in GLennwood Iowa and you'll see not only several porsches running on cut springs (cut aftermarket springs for custom suspension ) and maybe even freddy hawkin's Ford GT which we made a custom set of shocks from circle track car parts for and we had to cut a half coil off of each one and there's been no issues. The material for the spring gets cut at some point in it's life of manufacture (although usually before heat treating), but spring steal is still just that, spring steal, so as long as you don't build enough heat to take away the temper, or cut so much you effect the rate, the spring will be fine. This is not a job for "cheap lowering kits" this is more of a fine tune thing i'm talking about, but stating that it can be done safely. The one's i'm talking about are jobs where we only had to cut 1/4 to 1 coil off and couldn't order a spring in 8 and 7/16th inches long, just dumb little situations that needed it and i swore these old men were crazy but they are the ones that have the big name in the porsche raod race scene and although i disagreed for a long time i've now come to realize it can be done correctly.

Hahahaha.Yeah Im retarded  Gr-2s are stock replacement shocks.Apparently you dont understand that companies use gr-2s in packages because they are cheaper. Not because they are ment for performance...

KYB America LLC Shocks & Struts | Products | GR-2©

"The best choice to restore OE performance and normal driving conditions"

Im glad you use them and think its great. They dont perform anywhere what a shock MENT FOR LOWERING SPRINGS does. Theres more to a quality suspension than what your opinion on ride quality is. Do you understand how shocks actually work? If you did, I dont think you could logically argue that a shock ment for a oem spring height can be effectively used with a spring that is completely different. How about you explain to me the physics of rebound and travel since I'm " retarded".I'm interested to hear a actual technical reason from you.Not your warped opinion on performance. You really should read up on good suspensions before calling people out..your 2.25" dropped car with oem replacement shocks is not benefiting anything other than cosmetic appeal. You have got a lot of learning to do jr.
