Ive been searching a while for this, and no ideas.

The speedometer started by jumping around up and down at constant speeds.
turn on the cruise control, and it would stop.

then it started NOT working at all, it would sit on zero, hit the cruise on, and bam, up to speed.

now it works 10% of the time, and cruise control works 50% of the time.

trip and odometor work fine.

any ideas?

i assume its the speeds sensor.

well it is simple to look at the sensor. you just unbolt it from the top of the trans and look at it. if there is no visable damage i would get a multimeter and look up the voltage specs and check it right at the sensor to see if it is sending the right voltage/"info". and if it is sending the right info, then its not the sensor.

well, i mis reported, the speedometer/cruise/and odometer are not functional.

what does a speed sensor cost, and is it a part that is recommended to get used?

well the connector is firm and connected securley.

prety much that leaves the sensor itself.

Replace the speed sensor on top of the tranny, that is the fix. I broke mine off while changing out my tranny. It has a little plastic gear inside the tranny, I imagine that eventually this could wear out or get damaged. I'm not sure of the price, but call up Chrysler or Mitsu, I believe I got mine from Napa but I don't remember.

well im trying to find the plug to check that first...i have an automatic 95 talon. is that plug in the same spot?
It should be in the same place on an a/t transmission. It is located on the left side of the tranny, sort of under the throttle body. It is a black plastic piece with a connection at the top, which I might add is hard to get off. Hopefully that helps you locate it, I found it hard to find at first, until I dropped the tranny so make sure you have some light on the area.

thanks for the help...i'll see if i can find it tommorow. i guess i can delete my thread i started :thumb:

Mine mysteriously started working again, after the motor swap, all i did was unplug it, take it out. blast it wit degreaser. and put it back in.

the plug i found is like a redish color and has yellow, black, and black-yellow wires going into it.....is that the right one??? it doesnt seem to have come loose, i'll try WD-40'ing it to see if that will work. my trip and odometer dont work either...if i romp on the gas the speedo will work for a bit until i let off.....could that be more than the loose connection?

I had the same problems. I repleaced the speed sensor and the gauges and that didnt fix it. The thing that fixed it was replacing the plastic gear that goes inside the transmission, that is attached to the speedsensor. Now the Speedometer works perfect. The old gear was hardly worn at all, but replacing the gear fixed it and the part was only 12 dollars.

Do you remember where you purchased it for $12? i can get it at my local parts store but they have to order it and its $38. Also, i took mine out today since speedo and odometer were out, and degreased it put it back in and took it for a drive. It drove normally, with the speedo working until i shifted into fifth, then my engine revd on its own to about 5000 RPM. I shut it off and now each time i start it, it revs to 5000 immediatly. i have a 98 talon ESI manual transmission.
Any ideas anyone??
