Cross theaded oil plug...

so i went to change my oil and somehow ended up cross threading my oil plug.. Ive read around and saw that you can get a kit at autozone that gets cross threaded plugs out, but will there be little bits of metal that get into my oil system and end up ruining my engine? some people say these kits work and others say to just replace the oil pan. what should i do?

I would replace the pan. I'm not a fan of rigging it. It is $70 on rockauto.com

I bought one off of here, it works fine.

i'd definitely go with the new oil pan. if it takes a special tool get out the plug the threads on it are most likely torn up and even it you do use a tap and die kit chances are it will never fit in there the same. save the specialty recovery tools for parts you would have to cash in a bond to pay for

I would just remove the plug and chase the threads after the oil is drained and then pour some more in to clean up the threads. You need not worry about chips if you just flush some clean oil out through the drain. If a new plug strips out then you may need an oversized plug. Just take it to a decent oil change place whenever it's time to get it done and they will fix it for you to make themselves not liable.

I agree with ramsack unless there is nothing left of the threads then I would replace the pan.

Its easy enough to re thread and put in a different plug, but I would take it as an opertunity and put on a new oil pan
