okay, after spending 2 days researching I'm now scared to death of modding a 97 - 99 gsx because of crankwalk - I've read post after post of people saying that building a 7bolt is a waste of time because you'll just crankwalk it... would I have to worry about it with a SBR block like the one below?

SBR 2.0 Liter 4G63 Race Short Block Stage 1 - http://www.slowboyracing.com/more.php?id=1027&

thanks...

SBR uses 6 bolt motors unless other wise stated, I have delt with them in the past, great tech support, they like to work with you, no problems at all and Crankwalk is more a an urban legend if anything dont get scared of it people rarley get it.

6bolt motors dont get crankwalk at allso yes go for it, your completely safe

This is not true. Although you are much safer going with a 6-bolt, crankwalk can happen to either motor. Don't make a blanket statement like that.

If you are worried about crankwalk sell your car.

It is not as common as most think. What happens is that some tool sees that a 7 bolt took a shit and just blames it on crank walk. I bet if you asked everyone that said there car walked of they checked the end play in the crank 1 out of a 1000 would say yes. The rest are guessing and scaring the kiddies.

Perfect answer to the question asked.

I spoke to Craig at SBR about a new shortblock for my CW'd GST and he said they only use 6bolts shortblocks. He said they could build a 7bolt if I needed but they would only make a stage2 7bolt, and it would take about 5 weeks + delivery time. I didn't have the time, and the money so I ended up getting a new shortblock from satan.

I totally agree witht the great tech support, liking to work with customers, and no problems.

thank you my old 6bolt darn near came out the block(but i beat the crap out of it) had like 1/4 in of play... i build engines for a living and on the side for preformance/race apps.......the engine is only as good as the builder

that is a pretty steep number...probably more like 1-2%. come on, crankwalk is so overrated.

humm IMHO the 1-2% is of all DSM's or maybe i just hang around the wrong people i have a few friends all have 95 turbo eclipse's (apprently the worst year for CW) and all but 1 including myself have walked it mine being the soonest 107,XXX crankwalk is a real problem but i would agree that it is played out alot more i got the chance to open up the engine and make sure that it walked and it deffintly did the newer the DSM I.E. 98-99 the less likely you are to have it walk **this number could be stagered** there was a post awhile back that had a precent that walked w/ what years and i thought it was something like 46% of board posters w/ turbo 95 DSM's walked...agian i'm not saying that its the truth sent down by god just something to think about FYI having your car CW is deffintly the biggest let down ever

The long walk is not always a bad thing. I recently spun a rod bearing and just for grins and giggles we measured the crank endplay. The standard movement is .002", the service limit is .007". Mine was well over .009". I still went 12's and the car ran fine. However I will state that this is 2 motors in my car that have succumbed to crankwalk, the first original motor walking at 57,690 verified by Mitsu service records and the replacement motor failing from a spun rod bearing at 145,678. :thumb:

Ya know i'm really starting to hate these CW discussions. Things break, turbocharged things break faster. You want to modify your car plan on shit breaking. I have a special saving account called "for when shit breaks" I suggest you do the same. These cars are old, I don't know whats going to run out faster, gas or spare 1g blocks.

38 k. My engine was running fine. Did an autox test and tune day. 1/2 way through, I noticed I could not launch as usuall and wondered if my clutch was going. It would not grab.
at the end of the day, I was sitting on the line. Car stalled. Refused to restart. Long Story Short... Crank sensor got clipped. Why. Crank is sliding around about .0219"
1997 DOA.
I ran a T28 for 3 years and a Evo 16g for 6 mo. I bought the car new. Used Mobil 1 ONLY. Almost literally drove it ONLY on Sundays. :)
38000 miles. Not good. Should I have bought a Rx7. No, they go thru engines faster than us.

No use to worry about it though. If it happesns, it happends.

Rename the crank sensor to the "crankwalk sensor" Putting a SBR 1g in now. Good guys.

wow... if it werent so old it would probably still have the original mitsu warranty.

Crankwalk is a bit overrated. It does happen, but it seems like the 7-bolt guys hear about it more often than anyone. There are plenty of 7-bolt guys running very well. I had an issue with mine, and I'm reluctant to call it crankwalk anymore because it was never measured before the old motor went. Yes, I did rebuild my 7-bolt, and it's running stronger than ever. Does anyone know how much endplay it has to have to be able to smack the crank position sensor? (That I did have happen. thought it was the throwout bearing. 2 weeks later my crank split in half, no joke.)

If you told me my car was walking 2 years ago, I'd cry. If you tell me now, I'd laugh and change the motor in a weekend.

I think I would still cry..... not b/c of the crank walk, but b/c I have already spent my "when shit happens" savings LOL ROFL Otherwise I would be happy to build a new motor and swap it in :thumb:
