Probably a stupid question but 7 bolts arent my thing.
I got a hold of a evo 1 awhile ago that was suffering from crankwalk. I had the engine pulled and and a new crank put in. I planned to build a forged bottom end for this car but really wanted to see what the car could do stock first hence why i just put a new crank and bearings in it.
Now the car walked again with in a few thousand miles. Now I am hearing that you never reuse the block after crankwalk. Like I said 7 bolts are not my thing. I figured the block was fine it just needed a new crank and bearings.
Heres my question if this is true how can I tell if a bare block for sale has ever seen crankwalk? I am going to build a completely new bottom end and plan to just use a manly crank but I need a new block but i guess i need to make sure it has never walked, How do you tell if the factory crank isnt still in it? Any guidance would be appreciated.

I know some are reading this and saying just put a 6 bolt in. trust me it crossed my mind. But I want to keep it stock appearing on the outside as well as keep the stock evo 3 flywheel.

Aside from checking the mains on the block and looking for actual contact where the cranks has come into contact with the block, I dont see a way of telling.

That or ask to see the old thrust bearings.

Buy a block that is still assembled and you know it has not walked.

Seriously though, I would either find a later generation 7bolt(thrust washers) or swap the 6 bolt in. As far as "stock appearance", I have both a 7 and 6 bolt block sitting in front of me....not a whole lot of differences as far as visual. The evo3 flywheel....You wont ever see it? Why does it matter?

I would not look at what is going to look best of most like the stock car, but more on what will make it last longer instead of it walking every couple thousand miles or so.

Now I am hearing that you never reuse the block after crankwalk.

I am still not sure why this is after all these years. You mean to tell me, if you properly had the whole bottom end 100% rebuilt by a reputable machine-shop/vender, it would still walk shortly after?

Doesn't seem to make sense to me. I'm just really curious about this.

Just out of curiosity. Isn't there a way to machine the block to be able to use the thrust washers?
