Okay so today I was greasing up the pistons and walls wile the head is off so i dont get any surface rust, well I thought I would grab a socket and turn the crank slowly, i noticed it would only go about a turn and stop, then a turn the oposite direction and stop, i proboly could have turned it with some force but didnt want to mess anything up, other than that the pistons go up and down good for that first crank. Is this normal? Also i have a 6 bolt 92 eclipse gst.

Looks like a long pressure plate bolt to me, something that stiff shouldn't be a main/rod bearing.
If you don't see a long bolt on the outside of the flywheel I would pull the trans and have a look at the clutch while your at it.

Hows endplay on the crank?

How can I tell if something is rubbing the flywheel without pulling the trans, or am
I just going to half to pull the trans :)

Ill bet that fool has too long of a bolt somewhere in that motor causing it to lock up-does it make a sold thud when it stops rotating?

yes its a scratchy thud, it does go from turning great to a sudden thud. then you have to try to turn real hard then you get a scraping sound, then it breaks loose, and the process repeats :)

Okay problem solved...I went to pull the transmission today to check the bolts and when i went to loosen the transmission mounts, THEY WHERE ALREADY LOOSE :banghead: So i tightened them up and guess what, no more grinding, I have to replace the oil pan gasket but oh well! Thanks for all the help though guys.

okay so the problem was not solved but at least im making progress. Every time I tighten the bolt that connect the trans to the engine it scrapes and grinds if loosen them it doesnt? What the heck is happening here. Im at a loss for words...

Well at least you found where the problem is coming from. You either have a bolt that is too long or something in the clutch/flywheel area. It sounds like the tranny needs to come out.

I just don't see how tightening bolts interfere with anything and make the crank stick, that's very little change from tight to loose. The front engine mount looks a little crooked could it cause this?

Thats because something isn't right with the way the clutch/throwout bearing are installed. Maybe a bolt is too long on the pressure plate or flywheel.

Did you take the flywheel off? I wonder if the ring gear didn't slip and the side that you can't see is hitting the bellhousing when the trans is tight.

I haven't taken the trans off yet so i haven't pulled the flywheel, I hope its something simple, at least I'm 99.9% sure its nothing with the crankshaft.

So you never started or heard the engine running before you bought the car, right?

Did the guy you bought it from overhaul the engine?

Since you already have the head off, it would be easier to just pull the motor and not the transmission.

Yes the engine is built 6 bolt, JE 8.5-1 pistons, Eagle rods, Balance shafts removed, I don't have a picker right now if I can get my buddy to drop it off tomorrow i will just pull the engine, That way i can build the rest of the motor and just drop it in.

Also the guy I got the car from bought the car from the builder. the guy i got it from only had it for a month and couldn't pay for his shop anymore and had no trailer so i got the car, He said the guy built the car and went to start it and it sounded like metal on metal. I noticed when i got the car that someone had mismatched cam caps so i got a new head and swapped all the goodies from that head in the new one...I thought this would solve the problem until I found this, Now i am pretty sure that this is what he was hearing more than anything.

I believe that too. Do you have a small mirror? Pull the starter, stick the mirror in the starter hole and turn the crank. Look for a rub mark on the clutch side of the flywheel.

it funny you say that because i totally tried that but couldn't get enough light in there, either way i want to pull the engine, i can assemble better that way and easier to time!
