My 2G 1998 Eclipse has about 120k miles on it. I just had the clutch replaced, master/slave cyls and my engine mounts.

There is ostensibly a small crack in my head cover, caused when another place did a gasket replace and overtorqued. I haven't replaced that yet because I am poor and it is just leaching a small amount of oil, so I keep checking my levels but otherwise am not too concerned. (Bad call? Why?)

Here's my problem: My car frequently dips way below idle level when putting the clutch in after any level of driving. It will light up the lights and ALMOST-BUT-NOT-QUITE stall, but lately has taken to full on stalling.

Sometimes, this triggers a CEL. I've had it read before, and for ages, it was a Throttle Position Sensor.

Lately, it's reading as a Crankshaft Position Sensor.

Nothing terrible, except now, the car is shutting the engine down, even while in GEAR and sometimes restarting, sometimes not; as if the CPS is throwing an alert and causing the ECU to shut down to prevent damage or some such.

Does this sound about right? How else would a faulty CPS fail? What would cause the car to start randomly cutting out and then instantly back in (in a nasty jerking sensation) or sometimes just stalling out entirely?

Many thanks!

Sounds like it could be crank walk too.. Have you checked it for that. they're noramlly prone to going intermitnt while going out, unless they get too hot, then sometimes they don't return a signal very well.. They usually just stop working. Too bad they're such a PITA to get to as far as i remember.

Your last sentence leaves me to believe it might be faulty wiring, or the crankshaft moving back and forth

Google RRE crank walk. a ton of info on RRE's page about it..but almost too manhy orer stories. Yes it happens but not to evey other car like they lead you to believe.

Hello,sorry for my English.

I wanted to know how you arranged the problem. To my car the same thing goes on.

Thank you.

A bad CPS will shut down ignition and fuel pump. Sounds like it's on it's way out. If CEL says CPS replace it.

When my Crank sensor went out I still had Spark on all cylinders and the fuel pump would come on and build pressure but the ECU would not send a signal to the injectors to fire.

Replaced the sensor and everything was fine the trigger plate tore into the old one pretty good.

try replacing the crank sensor, and the cam sensor. my car did the exact thing, and i replaced those and the mfi relay and cleaned the electronic air idle control valve, then it ran fine after that. im not a 100% sure that is whats wrong with yours because we have different motors, but it worked for me and i figured id try and help out
