Do i really have to remove the crankshaft gear to adjust the time belt? That seems crazy to me. Theres no way around it? And i guess ill need a puller from autozone or are they not pressed on??

Putting a rebuilt head on and it seems crazy to have to take all that apart to adjust it. I guess there is no easier way?

The harmonic dampener (crank pulley) is not pressed on. To remove it, unbolt the 4, 12mm bolts and it will pull right off. You will need to remove it to take off the timing cover. The harmonic dampener only goes one way due to a alignment dowel. To turn it (without taking it off), stick a 1/2" dive ratchet in the crankshaft sprocket bolt (in the center of the harmonic dampener) and you can turn the crankshaft.

Okay thtas what i was hoping. But on mine there isnt only the 4, 12mm bolts. There is also a larger 17mm nut right in the middle. I cant seem to get the crankshaft to stay in one place hard enough to break that bolt loose.

Seems odd that no one else has this nut?

Or do i not need to remove that bolt? I do see it in the vfaq step by step. Its still on the motor. So i guess im just not pulling hard enough on the pulley? I have the four bolts removed, and the belts off also.

I mentioned it in my response. It is the "crankshaft sprocket bolt". You do NOT need to remove it to remove the harmonic dampener (crank pulley). Pull harder on the dampener or pop it off with a screwdriver or small prybar.

To remove that nut (which you don't need to) you would need a powerful impact wrench to pop it off, or a chain wrench to keep the dampener from turning and a big 1/2" drive breaker bar to break it loose.

Give the harmonic balancer a good tap with a deadblow (Don't beat the hell out of it, tap around it). It's probably corroded on or something. It will come off.

Kinda weird, for some reason i did have to remove that bolt. I mean it actually held the balancer on, maybe whoever owned it before put too big of a bolt on it? IDK but I had tried taping on it prior to posting and nothing happened. I finally got that bolt broke loose and it had a large enough head that it held on the balancer. Pretty strange.

I appreciate all the help though, I guess mine was just a little different.

Doh,

You have a 420a N/T. I was thinking a 4g63.

I've never worked on them so it may very well be the way it is, and seems to be from the quick search I did. My apologies for the misinformation.

If you don't have air tools to get the crankshaft sprocket nut loose (which as said before is not necessary to remove for timing belt job) you can use a 1/2 inch drive beaker bar in the middle of the large nut and use a jack or the ground to prop it up to keep it from rotating. Make sure to disconnect spark plug wires so it doesn't start. Then you can bump the starter really quick and it should be all set. Just a tip. I'm doing a Balance Shaft Elimination while replacing my Timing belt and someone gave me that tip also. Good luck.

Are you sure the crank bolt held anythng on? The harmonic balancer has a big washer and the bolt goes on top of that. They get corroded and may look like they are holding on to something but they really aren't. On a 7 bolt motor which your car should be (93) you do not have to remove anything to change the belts. On a 6 bolt motor you do have to remove that crank bolt and sprocket if you are changing the balance shaft belt assuming it still has one. Since you already have it off it doens't matter but as a point of refernce go look at your bolt, spacer and balancer. The spacer just fits in side the balancer. If somebody put an additional washer or something on there I would have no idea why.
