i've looked through my chiltons, and around af.com, here, vfaq, and google, but i'm not obvously looking in the right place. i have the block on my stand, the pistons, rods, out. im trying to get the crankshaft sprocket/gear off so i can take the back plate (or whatever its called that seperates it from the block) off so i can do the ballance shaft removel. do i need a special tool to take this thing off? becasue im stumped.

So you are trying to remove the crank gear... All you have to do is remove the bolt that holds it in place and maybe pry on it a little to get it to slide off. There isn't a whole lot to removing it. Although if you already have the timing belt off you won't be able to do the suggestion in the vfaq for removing the sprocket. www.vfaq.com it is under timing belt section. hope this helps

Yes, there is a special tool for removing the crank sprocket. It's Mitsu part number MD998778. It's just a metal plate that has 2 bolts that attach it to the sprocket. Then there's a bolt in the middle that you screw in to pop it off. A parts store like autozone should have something that will work that you can borrow.

i thought so. any inclination of its going price? im going to have to buy another tool box of all the tool's i've had to buy for this "inexpensive" 6bolt swap. man..

Special tool? I undid the crank bolt with a socket/ratchet and a big ass breaker bar.. But I had the transmission still attached so I could use a screwdriver to keep the crank from rotating. Then the crank sprocket just pulled/pried off pretty easily compared to getting the center bolt out.

I don't know what it costs. I know I paid like $15 for the timing belt tensioner tool from these guys, so I imagine the crank sprocket tool would be a bit more.

I would definitely check your local parts store first though. They'll usually have a universal tool you can borrow for free that will have multiple holes and different sized bolts with it.
