I would NEVER EVER polish my own crank... have it done by professionals... average cost is $35-45 for polish...
Unless you know what your doing and have the proper measurment tools for before/after...
. Cut a strip of 2000grit the same width as the journal and about 4 inches long. Slide over the crank surface in the same direction as rotation.
