what grit of paper sohuld i use to polish my crank?
couldnt find a thread aobut it, thanks!

I would NEVER EVER polish my own crank... have it done by professionals... average cost is $35-45 for polish...

Unless you know what your doing and have the proper measurment tools for before/after...

ive polished v-8 cranks before. . .and all i recall doing is just putting oil on it and goin at it for a few seconds. .
its not got and deep scratches nor really any at all i just wanted a quick clean up

Yall have confidence. Id suggest just spending the extra $35 instead of ruining your rebuild by being cheap.

I can see using steel wool like someone said, but sandpaper, hell no.

2000grit sand paper is what a shop will do at times. They use their hands, not robots or their big balls. Cut a strip of 2000grit the same width as the journal and about 4 inches long. Slide over the crank surface in the same direction as rotation.

i went to napa and they gave me some kind of clloth i forget what its called but it says 180 on it

I have used that to clean some things that need to be smooth and it works really good. I suppose if you're really careful you could do it. But I myself would most likely f**k it all up.

its not like ima go to town on it though. . .im just cleanin it up a bit , theres prob no need for it but i wanna be on the safe side

Yeah, you will probably be ok. does it have light scratches you want to get rid of or something. or is it just dirty

Nothing wrong with doing it yourself if your careful.

Start with 400 grit and then go finer to 600. Clean it well when done, including oil passages.

i used some scottbritte to clean some surface rust off, other than that i take my crank to have the shop polish it for 20 bucks.
