Crank timing off?

It's nearly impossible to tell. The picture is so dark and you're zoomed up so close everything looks cockeyed.

Use the search, and look up "Timing Marks."

Or break out the handy Chilton Manual (which every DSMer SHOULD already have) and I think it's in chapter...6. I used it not too long ago. 6-26 or 9-26.

Hold on! No balance shaft. So no. "Timming" is not off. Because without the BS. The oil pump timming marks dont matter.

Good to know! I honestly didn't know that!! Thank you! You just saved me a shit load of stress! I was having the worst time, timing my engine...because my oil pump was off. But I have BS removed sooooo...I'm just gonna call it done! Thanks for the heads up.:D

Been through the Chilton/Haynes manuals, been through VFAQ. Was just curious if it was a tooth off or not.

Was either it is a tooth off or too much fuel and wetting the spark plugs that is causing my no crank issue from what I have found so far.

Well IMO it's too hard to tell from the way the picture is taken and the lighting. A flash and pull back a little from the crank to show some perspective and it would be a little easier to tell.

I slipped a tooth on the exhaust cam once. It cranked up but sounded like a v8 with a huge cam. When I put it into gear it would cut off. Thank god that was the only thing that happened.

Wish I had been that lucky...at least yours sounded cool. When I first tried to time the engine on my first DSM back in the day, apparently I was WAY off. We cranked it over and OMFG...I will never in my entire life forget the crashing/banging/scraping/VERY LOUD sound of pistons smacking valves. I was just lucky not to have screwed anything up.

Something like that. My dumb self drove it for a few days like that before I figured out what went wrong! LOL I mean full throttle runs trying to break something!! Ah well.. the good ole days. Then the weekend came and I checked timing. Da da! Something slipped! But that was my first timing belt job. Took me 8 hrs. The fix took me about 2. Then, I didnt tighten the balance shaft belt tensioner enough and it was leaking a quart of oil every 30 miles! So the next weekend finally fixed that mess. :thumb:

Haha don't you just LOVE the "Learning Phase?" I'm still feeling growing pains! I'm finishing my VERY FIRST swap tomorrow and gods honest truth...I don't wanna start it. I REALLY don't. It looks pretty just sitting in there and if I never start it...nothing can blow up, which means I'll never know I screwed up somewhere. :D

I remember the first timing belt I did on it. I turned the crank over by hand like 10 times to make sure everything was timmed correctly. I was scared when I finally cranked it up. ROFL
