OK i have a 1997 eclipse gsx. I was wondering do i need the CPS that is down on by the crank sprocket to control the CAS that is on the passenger side of the engine? Because i got a new block that didnt have that metal plate that comes behind the crank sprocket. Sorry if it is confusing and let me know if i need to explain better. Thanks

Not sure exactly what you're asking, but you need both for the engine to run properly. That is, unless you convert it to use the 1g cas. However, if all you're missing is the crank trigger plate, I would think it'd be easier to just get another plate.

Why are you asking is your car not running or throwing cell. It could possibly have a 6 bolt swapped motor that does not use cps. It uses the cam sensor to fake signal to ecu. What's the problem be more specific.

If the new block doesn't have the crank trigger plate just get a new/used one or use the one off your old block when you swap everything over.

If the new engine is a 7 bolt than just install the trigger plate and sensor, if it is a 6 bolt than you will just have to run the 1g cam angle sensor.

The new 7 bolt does not have the trigger plate behind the crank sprocket. So i was wondering if i needed it, but it seems like it needs it to be able to run the CAS on the top of the engine. I have all the parts and trigger plate and all, just needed to know if i needed to swap it over, which includes taking the timing belt off. Also, the car is not running as i am in the middle of swapping engines, so i do not have any cel because i cant tell. Thank you

Well, with the 1g CAS you have the benefit of getting both crank and cam signals with one sensor. Not to mention the fact that you can actually adjust timing with the 1g CAS. I kept having problems with the 95-96 style cam sensors shorting out. And obviously every time they did, I had to remove the timing belt to replace them. I haven't had a single issue since switching to the 1g CAS. But, I'm no expert, and I guess it all comes down to personal preference.

Yes i get that and i do understand what you are saying. The only problem is that i havent found a 1g CAS and am just wanting to use the oem ones that came with the car. This car will be completely stock and wont see boost past the wastegate pressure. So i dont really need one to adjust timing and everything. Also, i live in California where smog is a big deal. If i have one on my car they might fail me because it didnt "come from the factory like that". So id rather not do it, even though itd pass, visual sucks. So as for now, i want to use the oem CAS's. I guess i will be taking the timing belt off and switching the trigger plate to the other block. Good thing i have the engines out. Ha.
