Cooling system problem - over cooling sort of

Well I am having a slight overcooling problem on my 92 Talon.

I live in Northeast PA and has just started to dip down into the lower temps. Today for example it is about 40 degrees. At highway speeds, I can't get the car even close to normal operating temp.

Let say I jump in the car in the morning, I can drive for 15 minutes on the highway at 70mph and the temp gauge stays almost burried cold. The interior heat gets warm, but not hot, and its not quite hot enough to defog the side windows when they start fogging up.

Now lets say I get off the highway and hit the McDonalds drive-thru, 5 minutes in line and now the temp is almost up to normal & the gauge is reflects this.....just left of 12 o'clock......normal operating temp. The heater will also blow hot air now instead of warm.

Despite the overcool condition, the engine runs fine.

During the summer when it is warm to hot weather I had no such problem. I can also tell you that if the weather gets up to the 50/60s then cooling fans come on like normal too.

I installed an OEM/mitsu thermo just a little over 2 years ago as normal routine maintenance. I had no such trouble last winter.

I also installed a Fluidyne radiator in Feburary. I do not recall this problem happening during the cooler Feb/Mar months. BTW, I went with a Fluidyne only because the stock rad had leaky endtanks....not because of a cooling problem.

So at this point I highly doubt its the sender because the gauge works and the interior heater is consistant with the gauge.

I think the thermo might be stuck open and when on the highway the coolant gets overcooled because it don't stay in the block long enough.

Or if the thermo is working fine, and the Fluidyne is just doing too damn good of a job.

I think it the thermo is stuck open....

...does anyone have any input?

stuck open would have been my first guess... other then the fact that its pretty new.
I still would prob start there sence they dont cost that much.
Did da re-wire the fans or anything? do you no if the fans stay on once there on ?

If ALL ELSE fails and it turns out that the new radiator is just to good... ya can do the old-timmers trick of putting a piece of cardboard ( or somthing simular ) in front of part of the radiator. ( maybe block 1/4 to 1/2 of it )

Fans are still wired and functioning as stock.

I think the thermo is open. I took the coolant cap off when the engine was cold, started it up, and watched the fluid, it appeard that there was quite a bit of movement....So i am thinking its definitely open.

If the engine is cold and the cap is off, there should be little coolant movement up there.

I agree, replace your thermostat.

Also, for anyone else reading this thread, you can get an all-metal replacement radiator if you don't want to spring for the Fluidyne.

RadiatorExpress $120 w/ stock fan mounting locations :thumb:

Everytime my thermostat has failed it failed open and always when it was cold outside. Don't know why but after three of them, I know that when the engine doesn't come up to temp within 5 mins of starting the thermostat has failed open again.

BTW, Fix your profile data please. It always helps to know the year and model your talking about.

Steve, I can't...... the profiles only allow for 1 vehicle. I have a 92 TSi Awd and a 97 GST. Thats why I mentioned in my original post, it was on the 92 Talon

I have decided to try another OEM, got one coming hopeful Monday.....although I probably won't get to the install it until Thursday.....too damn busy
