Well I am having a slight overcooling problem on my 92 Talon.
I live in Northeast PA and has just started to dip down into the lower temps. Today for example it is about 40 degrees. At highway speeds, I can't get the car even close to normal operating temp.
Let say I jump in the car in the morning, I can drive for 15 minutes on the highway at 70mph and the temp gauge stays almost burried cold. The interior heat gets warm, but not hot, and its not quite hot enough to defog the side windows when they start fogging up.
Now lets say I get off the highway and hit the McDonalds drive-thru, 5 minutes in line and now the temp is almost up to normal & the gauge is reflects this.....just left of 12 o'clock......normal operating temp. The heater will also blow hot air now instead of warm.
Despite the overcool condition, the engine runs fine.
During the summer when it is warm to hot weather I had no such problem. I can also tell you that if the weather gets up to the 50/60s then cooling fans come on like normal too.
I installed an OEM/mitsu thermo just a little over 2 years ago as normal routine maintenance. I had no such trouble last winter.
I also installed a Fluidyne radiator in Feburary. I do not recall this problem happening during the cooler Feb/Mar months. BTW, I went with a Fluidyne only because the stock rad had leaky endtanks....not because of a cooling problem.
So at this point I highly doubt its the sender because the gauge works and the interior heater is consistant with the gauge.
I think the thermo might be stuck open and when on the highway the coolant gets overcooled because it don't stay in the block long enough.
Or if the thermo is working fine, and the Fluidyne is just doing too damn good of a job.
I think it the thermo is stuck open....
...does anyone have any input?
