Just bought my first 2g dsm today; but it had a sprite 2L bottle for the coolant container. It seems to over heat with it though every 2 hrs!

They guy told me I need a "over cam." Looked for this part and found nothing. He said to get the after market one because its $20 as the stock one is $30. If this helps at all what am I looking for?

it had a sprite 2L bottle for the coolant container
And you still bought this car why??ROFL

Anyway...

"Over Cam" is definately not the right name. Did the guy not speak good english? Maybe he meant "overflow can", as in the OEM coolant overflow container? Do you know what this part is supposed to do or where it goes? Maybe that will help to figure out what it is.

The coolant bottle will not cause your car to overheat. Check a couple of things:

When do you overheat? Idle and cruising have slightly different solutions.

Is there a return hose lowered in the bottle that's able to draw coolant back into the system? If not, you need to get one as fluid is not returning to the system even if it cools down a bit, causing more overheating.

Is there alot of fluid in the bottle after an extended drive? If there is, your radiator cap might be bad. A 13 pound cap can be found cheap at pep-boys. Give it a try. Also, when your system cools down, make sure all that fluid gets drawn back in. If it overflows and gets dumped out, your bottle is too small or you are overheating way too much.

Do you have a front mount intercooler or anything else that restricts airflow to your AC condensor and radiator? This is a different issue altogether... will elaborate if it turns out so.

Are your fans working? After idling for abou 5-10 mins, your fan should kick on... try wiring both fans together for more airflow.

Do you have enough fluid in your system? Should be obvious

LOL either way I wouldn't use a 2 liter soda bottle for a coolant reservoir.

Check to make sure the coolant reservoir mounting bracket is there (just in case)

Is your 2g DSM a turbo or non-turbo? The 4g63 (Turbo) and 420a (NA) engine use different types of reservoirs. Both are different shapes, and the reservoir for the 4g63 (Turbo) has a coolant sensor on it.

My NT Eclipse coolant reservoir fell into my accessory pulley TWICE... The first time I just patched it up with epoxy (it wasn't too big of a slice). The second time it fell it it nearly cut it in half. I just went to a junk yard and found a reservoir off a wrecked 2g for only 5 bucks. Had to bleach the mold and mildew out of it but now its good as new.

I think this would be your best option. Those "universal" coolant reservoirs in auto parts stores and Wal-Mart cost more, plus they don't have the perfect fitament.

Thank You all for your responses. you all will be given rep points.

It is the overflow cam sorry forgot the flow  ! thats what I'm usin a 2 L bottle as; which I went outside this morning and the bottle had a hole in it from the heat of the engine. I know were the OEM coolant overflow containter goes, in place of the 2L bottle, but ill have to figure out how to mount it in.

It sucked because driving it after like 10 mins it would idle high because of the lack of water.

And it is the 4g63 turbo.

You can find cheap snazzy ones on ebay if you go the ebay motors section and type over-flow or similiar. If you start your car and the engine gets right almost instantly and starts to overhead when you touch the gas you could have a more serious problem as in the water pump went out. (Typical car takes 2-3 min on a warm day to get hot; if your car is over heating in 30 seconds its probably the water pump)

**Also check the mixture of coolant to water. If it is watered down too much then your water will boil. Coolant lowers the freezing point and raises the boiling point...boiling water will not allow your car to remove heat from the engine and will over heat. Any oiol change place can that for you...usually for free!

This may seem like a stupid question but I want to make sure:)

What is the container thats holds the cooland? Is it the over flow? Because the guy I bought the car from said to keep putting water in the 2L bottle. He said I just needed an over flow cam to fix the problem and and I'm not seing a containter for the coolant so I'm guessing the over flow cam is the collant container...

Okay I just ran the over flow on ebay and I have found the answer to my question to be yes:) the over flow cam is the collant tank!

Thank You ALL for helping me! I'm sure I will have more posts soon!

Wel it turns out the over flow was not the solution. I put in a new over flow and hooked it up. I dont know about just lettin it sit there for like 5 mins but when i drive it for 10-15 mins (not takin it about 4k rpm) takin it easy on it, it still over heats. It starts to idle real hard, startin at about 2.5k and then hits about 3.5k rpm. Also when I turn off the engine and it sits for like 10 sec the coolant flows out the second tube comin out of the over flow(cant remember what its called WTF ) But the coolant drains back into the over flow and then flows out the air tube....

HELP PLEASE LOL

Make sure your fan(s) are coming on. Flush and refill the radiator (perhaps a 60/40 water to coolant ratio). Replace your thermostat.
