Does that mean it has 2g 8:5:1 pistons in it or something?

It could also easily be carbon buildup depending on when the last rebuild was.

Try some seafoam if it is older, and that might bring those numbers down to their expected range.

Motor only has 40k miles on it...

I have 175 across the board on my 6 bolt, with stock pistons. Some compression testers read higher than others.

Does that car feel like it's running well otherwise?

Smells kinda fishy.
IBnot a 6 bolt.

Oh really? So these might very well just be stock pistons?

BTW, this guy used the same compression tester on his other two 1g's that he has and he was in (low) 160's with them.

Runs perfect. Was driven on a 400 mile trip with zero problems.

BTW thanks for all the help so far.

it could have any 8.5:1 compression pistons, I'd get in touch with the previous owner of the block.

Tried.. no luck :(

Car was built by this guy who sold it to this girl who sold it to this guy in a package deal with her boyfriends 98 AWD Talon, haha. And hes keepin the AWD and selling the FWD, which the girl knew not very much about. She drove it for a total of 5k miles, then her and her boyfriend got out of the DSM scene.

Is the crank timing plate on out of phase? The timing plate (between the crank sprocket and balance shaft sprocket) could be on at 2 o'clock rather then 10 o'clock. The car would run fine'ish but the boost response would be very poor. If you revv'ed it up past 5500rpm, the pistons would meet the valves. I've seen it before.

Eithe that, it's a pne of a kind block or it's an old 7-bolt.
