alright guys and gals, friends got a 92 eagle talon n/t 5 speed. Either his transmission or clutch/throw out bearing went out and I was hoping you could help me fiqure out which one before we tear it apart. Basically, when the cars off, it feels like the car is shifting into gears when you cycle through them, but once you start the car and try to shift into any gear(1,2,3,4,5th) they don't engage and just wanna grind. The thing is, it'll still shift into reverse and drive in reverse. I'm leaning towards the transmission it's self but I want to get a couple other opinions. what do you all think??

I say clutch. Its an engagement problem, it sounds like the disc is shot or some other clutch problem. Ive always read and heard if you can cycle throught the gears with the car off that the tranny is fine and its the clutch.

How did the car drive before he couldnt get it into any gears? Was the clutch slipping real bad? Not being able to shift into any gear seems kinda odd the tranny just blew up all of a sudden, Ive also had cars that you could pop it in reverse without using the clutch.

WAIT, are you trying to shift into gears with the car running just sitting there? Or are you talking about driving? Can you put the car in first with the car off, then start it and take off? If so, the clutch is probably not totally gone if the car actually moves. Give me some more info, Ive had many clutch replacements and know how to diagnose a clutch, I can tell you if its that or not.

regardless to what the issue is your gonna have to pull out the tranny and make repairs, chances are if its goin in reverse and driving but none of the other gears will work its probably a internal tranny issue instead of a clutch, because the clutch engages to drive in reverse either way you gotta pull it to know for sure.

I hadn't talked to him about it for about 2 weeks while I waited for him to contact me on if he had everything to do the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing...talked to him today and he said that reverse is out now too...so I'm definently thinking clutch, but I'll try starting it after I put it in first(with car off)...it might be a few days before I get to his place to try this though. Also, I don't know if it was starting to slip before hand or not...he just said he was driving home from a different town, went to excelerate and the engine just started reving up...that's why I was thinking probably clutch...cause he didn't say anything about any noises when it happend. Thanks guys, just looking for confirmations that other people thought it was clutch also. Appreciate all the advice.

yeah revving while your just cruising down the road and not grabbing gears sounds like a clutch issue, and i hope thats all it is but when you say it grinds and doesnt wanna go into gear that sounds like a synchro issue.

Tear it apart, and if the clutch is indeed trashed, then its the clutch. I couldnt see it being the tranny if it shifts through the gears fine when the car is off. Youll know when you take it apart.

i am getting this same problem, i just sold my 420a-t today and the guy called me tonight and said something happend so i had to go help him out. i got there and it would go into gear with car off but wouldnt with the car on, now if i put in first and hold down the clutch and start it, it starts to drive away on me. so my pedal to the floor isnt doing anything. i didnt pull anything apart yet but im doing that tomorrow, i know its not master and slave cyl because i just replaced those and everything moves.(slave/fork) i dont know what it is but i have to find out tomorrow, i hear it could be a broken fork or something. it feels like there is no pressure plate in there anymore. would adjusting the master at the pedal help me? he said he was driving it around just to get the feel for his new car and coming up a hill and hit second gear and it just stoped moving just reving. he put it in reverse and backed out of the driveway he was in and tried 1st again, and it didnt move at all so he had to push it. any help would be great.

i have a gsx to look at also so when car is off i can put into gear clutch or no clutch. but when th car is on, without pushing in the clutch you cant push it into gear. so its the smae thing i have with the 420a, its like im not pushing in the clutch pedal and trying to shift. its not tranny because if you push hard enough is creeps a very little bit...please help guyes

ok so i went to the guyes house and after about 3 hours of work i got the tranny off and clutch pulled off. first the clutch was blown apart, second the pressure plate prongs were smashed to crap. and third is that i have never seen a clutch like this before,, the preassure plate and clutch disc was all one peice, and to take it off the flywheel i had to unbolt it from the back of the flywheel(4 bolts) it was the weirdest thing ever. i guess it has to be a stock clutch. what ever, i ordered him a new one and it will be here tomorrow for me to put it on.
