I will try and best explain all scenarios. I just bought this car and will be taking tranny out to investigate, but requires some front rad support fix before I do. So place your bets.

2G: 6 Bolt Engine (20K). 7 Bolt Tranny. (Unknown Stage 2 puck clutch)

#1. Engine Running. Stationary. 1st gear. Clutch Pressed In. Rev to 7500. (car does not move).

#2. Engine Running. Stationary. 1st gear. Clutch Pressed in. Engine Stalls

#3. Engine Running. Stationary. Neutral. Clutch Out. No Stalling.

#4. Engine Off. On an incline. Stationary. 1st Gear. Clutch in. Won't roll backwards.

#5. I have observed while driving , when up shifting from 3rd to 2nd, clutch in, once I hit second, RPM's come up and drop as if clutch pedal was released even though I have it pressed in.

#6. While driving, All shifts below 4K are painful to listen to. (there is a sweet spot between 3700 and 4200 rpm to shift with minimal interference)

#6. Engine Running. Stationary. Clutch Pressed In. Locked out of all gears. Engine off. RPMs dip by 100 when attempting to select a gear.

Thoughts? tranny? Clutch? Flywheel? Release fork requires shimming? Thanks in advance.

Chuck

P.S. Vent from top of tranny looks like it has been missing a long time. I changed fluids couple days ago (GM Syncromesh).. no change. (old stuff looked ok.. little dark, no shavings)

Your terminology is confusing the shit out of me. Let's make sure we are on the same page.

Clutch in = pressed in, to floor
Clutch out = peddle all the way up, no pressure on it.
Up shift = shifting to higher gear
Down shift = shifting to lower gear

Is the car running when you say 'stopped' or is the car off?

If you hear a noise from the tranny with the clutch out, then throwout bearing is gone.

Are you getting proper throw when pressing the clutch in? Have you bleed the system and replaced the fluid? If you can't get the car into any gear while running, with clutch in then clutch is toast(if you are getting proper throw) If you have trouble while turned off, could be linkage or the previous owner has been driving the car way past the point of no return and the tranny is shot. If the tranny fluid looked ok, then previous owner may have already tried the easy fix before he sold it to you. There could have been all kinds of metal in it, but you will never know.

Im betting on clutch/flywheel and some damage to tranny. May still get some miles out of it with new clutch kit, but I would look inside while I have it out. Good luck.

Edited: For clarification.

Wouldn't hurt to shoot the dude a text that you bough the car from. You already paid for it, so he may have some additional insight after the fact.

I agree with StevetotheH about this being a very confusing description. And yeah, try bleeding the clutch before you go tearing it out. If i understand what I believe you are trying to convey, is that the clutch is not releasing all the way. Could be throwout bearing, pivot ball, clutch fork, but i always prefer to start with the cheapest and easiest.

Same page. When I say stopped, I mean stationary. I have updated my descriptions. Sorry for confusion

Sent him a text. He is surprised as worked well for him. But I did notice he was not the best at taking off from a light. LOTS of clutch riding to get it going (unnecessary).

I'll try bleeding the clutch first. Thank you DSMattitude.

Can't drop the tranny till I get the darn tuner lugnut key from previous owner, as well as getting that front support fixed. Otherwise, center member may not bolt back up. >.<
I have a leaking inner CV boot on passenger side also.

I wanted a project car. I got one. (Just wanted one I could drive this summer. :p)

Car isn't moving right now anyway. There are bigger issues than the oil in it. Once I drop tranny and confirm tranny is ok.. Will replace with diaqueen. No point if tranny is farked.
