Hey guys. Im pretty new here so cut me a little slack. Ive already researched my problem but couldn't really find one to match it up. Alright I've got a 91 talon tsi fwd. Picked it up about two weeks ago for a pretty good price. On my test drive I did notice that the clutch felt a little weak, or soft. It had a hard time starting off in first, really jumpy and rough. So I figured the clutch was probably going out and hasnt been replaced or looked at in 18 years. So the first week I had it things where fine, and other than starting off, It ran great.
Not long ago however, under boost in 5th gear past 3 grand my revs would jump up and the speedo wouldnt move. I know that this means my clutch is slipping, and the problem got persistantly worse untill it gradually moved down through all the gears. So last night coming home through a snowstorm I was in 3rd gear doing about 20mph, babying it as i had been, when my revs shot up like normal clutch slippage. I got off the gas and dropped it into 2nd, when then a light "clunk" noise was heard and I lost all power to my wheels. My question would be did my clutch just let go completly, or is there a bigger problem? The car starts up and idles fine, but you can cycle through every gear with the engine on, and the clutch not being depressed. It's like the Tranny is in neutral all the time. All the gears go in as normal, even reverse. Thanks for any help you guys.

Yep my bet is that your clutch is totally toast. Put an ACT 2100 or 2600 in there and you'll be good to go again. You will want to buy a new flywheel since you probably FUBAR'd yours!!! Generally when it starts to slip the flywheel gets all sorts of hot and if the material was down to the rivits on the clutch disc then you are going to have deep scratches in the flywheel surface. Normally I would just recommend turning the flywheel but in your case I'm thinking it's not going to be an option... Pull the trans and the clutch and let us know how it looks. And I mean pictures...

+1 on that. you won't really know till you pull it on the flywheel.

thanks guys. guess ill be pretty busy here for a few days tearing this thing apart. Crappy deal. Any idea were i could get the ACT for a decent price?

Alright so I finally found a couple hours today to pull the tranny. This was my first sideways 4cylinder motor and i quickly found it kinda sucks without a lift. Anyway as soon as i pulled the tranny away from the block all sorts of clutch material fell out. I got the clutch out, and as i figured there wasnt really anything left. Suprisingly though, for one reason or another my flywheel didnt feel as bad as I would have thought. Im hoping that i can just have it turned, or spend the $50 and getting it resurfaced as money is tight right now. The pictures arnt the best but you can at least see how bad my clutch was actually destroyed.

I'm glad you mentioned something about shimming. I planned on just tossing the flyheel back in there. Thanks for the idea on extreme psi to, as soon as a paycheck comes in I'll get the ACT. Untill the ill be driving my Isuzu Amigo around aha

Before i start im on my laptop that has no "double-you" key. a real pain in the ass. i use *'s for them ;)

Alrighty so i had time today to pop off my fly*heel, and the results didnt really please me. I have a couple rather distinct burn marks(kinda figured that I *ould) but also about 100 tiny little hairline cracks that run the entire diameter. I'd have pics but my camera decided to take a fart to. Is it even possible to turn this one or should I just invest in another one. If I have to, are light*eight fly*heels a good option and ho* are they going to affect my talon?

It is possible as long as the cracks aren't deep. Meaning that if they turn it once and don't get to the bottom of the crack and you can still see it you will NOT want to use it. I have seen people's cars get destroyed from a flywheel that decided to disintegrate. Luckily no one died. If they cannot get all the cracks removed then you will HAVE to get a new flywheel. I suggest the Fidanza or ACT wheels. The Fidanza one can be found on EBAY for cheap and is pretty light and reliable. The ACT one you can find at pretty much all of the site's supporting vendors.

So I took the flywheel up to a shop where I work part time, and we all got together and decided that turning this one probably wouldnt be a good idea due to the deepness and severity of the cracks. I cant begin to describe how tight money is right now, ive got tuition to wyotech to pay for in the upcoming months among a ton of other crap. So after alot of research i found i can just get a stock flywheel from partsamerica.com for like 50 bucks, and they sell a OEM clutch kit for like 120 bucks also. I plan on getting a lightweight flywheel and ACT clutch as soon as the money decides to rain upon me, but untill then OEM parts should last me a couple thousand miles right? You can look on my profile thing I think and see that i dont really have alot of huge power adders or anything so im thinking it will be okay. correct me if im wrong

OEM is fine. They support a good amount of power and your are FWD so you'll be fine. Good luck with everything man. I was going to suggest a stock flywheel.

Don't worry i feel you. I just broke my pressure plate the other night and i'm just prolyl gonna sand the flywheel down myself and i'm putting a stock clutch kit in it for now. And later on putting an ACT 2600 with fidanza flywheel. Between this and keeping my turbo civic running good takes alot of money =[

hey at least thats good news. Money can sure be a pain huh? I was kinda curious to see how my talon would run with a lighter flywheel though. Stock is 19 pounds and most aftermarket are in the area of 11 pounds I belive. Seems like it would be a huge differnce. LOL how does that turbo civic run man? I havent ran into any in Montana that could even come close to giving me a run but hey, its only montana right?
