I have a 1997 GSX and am having a problem with the clutch and master cylinder after the shop worked on it.

The car was great shape but had a minor leak inside from the master cylinder. I tolerated this for literally 5+ years by simply bleeding the line every 3 months or so. Then I decided to get it fixed, and trouble began.

It seems a fairly simple replacement, a couple bolts and bleed the line. The shop suggested I also do the slave cllindre, ok fine.

Shortly after I got it back, it started to slip. I noticed the clutch pedal seemed hard, like it was over filled and pressure in the the line constantly. I took it back and the shop says it needs a new throwout bearing and clutch. I seriously doubt this since it was running fine, but with 145K miles, new clutch probably not a bad idea. So, they also install new throwout bearing and clutch (over $1000). A week later, the same problem slipping after driving short time and stopping.

I've read the forums on this, so I had them adjust it to no avail, same problem. So, had them replace the master cylinder again (no charge). Same problem.

I've noticed what is does is drives fine for 15 min or so, but then when I stop and start driving again, it starts slipping. Then when I let it sit for an hour, it drives fine again. So, it acts like some pressure is builds up, makes it slip, then when that is relieved, it works ok.

Back to shop. They say "we think its the 'proportional clutch valve' which is part of the system to keep you from 'speed shifting'" I have never heard of nor can I find on any diagram for a clutch - yes on a brake system. Anyway, they are willing to get it from Mitsu dealer and do it at no charge given their inability to fix after 5 trips back. Go for it.

This is the ROTHLOL segment - after a week wait, the part comes in, I ask to see it when dropping off my car. Its a slave cylinder! They already replaced that. I told them to go ahead and install it (since its a Mitsu original part and free) then I will have both their installed master and slave removed and new ones installed.

So, my Q is, what else could it be? Any ideas? Thx Mc

Sounds like they arnt bleeding and adjusting the clutch system properly. Have you followed the jacks trans method?

you need to follow the instructions on how to properly bleed and adjust your clutch. check the video on the post above that should greatly help you. i never take my car to a shop. half the time they have no idea wat they are doing, IMO.

I appreciate this link, in fact saw it earlier, printed it off the link and gave it to the shop as guidance to them.... so yes, I agree they appear to have a lack of experience to fix it IMO. BTW, i

The shop followed the bleeding instructions but said they now think the md749915 clutch fluid chamber is the problem. It sits on the side of the clutch / tranny, a small cylinder like a gas filter, between the master and slave cylinders. According to the shop the Mitsu dealer no longer carries (hard to believe). I'm wondering if their sloppy work could possibly have contaminated the line and some trash is blocking in this fluid chamber and causing pressure in line and hence the slipping... then after stopping for a few minutes, the fluid drains back past the trash and gets back to equilibrium and works again.

What do you think?
anyone have experience with this part?
parts site recommendations to find it?

Thx, Mc

Go underneath your dash by the clutch pedal and loosen the 12mm nut and then loosen the rod so it has some play.that should solve your problem.

You can always delete the clutch accumulator with a straight SS line from master to slave. They sell the lines at jnz and stm. But if they are bleeding the clutch and getting fluid, I doubt it's blocked up.

I think they dont know what they are doing nor do they kniw how to adjust the clutch. Go push on the slave. It should push back in to the bore. If it doesnt there is a good chance the pedal isnt adjuated correctly. Its over adjusted and the system is closed. What you have now is a system yhe wont adjust and pumps up afterva bit, pedal gets hard and clutch slips. Sound familiar? A quick adjuatment at the pedal may fix it.

adjust the clutch pedal. as mentioned before, under the dash you can adjust the rod and also bleed the system completely. Go with the ss line.

You win the prize! It was in fact the adjustment on the rod from master cylinder. I loosened the nut and adjusted the rod about 3 turns and now it seems ok. Time will tell.

BTW, during my research I found a post that 2Gs have this 'clutch pump up' syndrome and unless adjusted exactly, the line can be partially blocked in the master cylinder which leads to the pressure build up in the line.

Thx for the help. Mc
