Im semi new to dsms ive had a 98 gsx 5spd for about 3 months and this is my first car.

When i bought the car the oem clutch was on its way out and now its time to upgrade.
**My question is which clutch and flywheel to go with? My gsx still has the STOCK 7BOLT so im worried about the crank. Any and all help is appreciated!

I was looking at the act 2600 clutch and fidanza flywheel... Or an exedy stage 1 with the fidanza flywheel. Not sure though

My upgrades include....

EvoIII 16g
560cc injectors
Walbro 255
AFPR
ETS big fmic w/ short route piping
1g crushed bov
poly motor mounts
FP race manifold & o2 housing
Dejon tool 3" intake
K&N filter
Full 3" Magnaflow Exhaust with high flow cat
Greddy profec B SpecII
GM MAF
MAF Translator
LC-1 wideband
autometer cobalt boost and oil press
RRE short throw shifter

This has Been covered many times LOL. But the two most popular seem to be act2600 and the xtd stage 4.
The xtd is cheaper but still a really good clutch. That's what I run. Also to help your crank out don't get a lightweight flywheel. You will want one closer to factory weight. I believe the xtd kit comes with a 11lb.
That is a better weight than most 7-9lb flywheel. Also chromoly is a good material.
You may want to also look into southbend clutches. Really good stuff there too.

Do a Google search like this. Dsmtuners clutch choice or options.
You will find plenty of info to read up on and help you make your own choice.
Don't buy something just because someone recommends it.

Good luck ;)

I would suggest a South Bend SS/TZ. They have a lighter 2200lb pressure plate so they're easier on thrust bearings than a 2600, but still very capable of holding power. If your really worried about crank walk (which you shouldn't), one of the best things you can do is bypass the clutch neutral switch so you can start the car without pressing the clutch.

Ive been looking on the classifieds. Theres the southbend clutch kit and flywheel or the act2600 w/ fidanza flywheel. So my biggest concern is crankwalk.... Should i be that concerned?

Its something to consider. If your really worried about it just get a southbend 2200lb pressure plate, or xtd uses a 2300lb. And choose a good flywheel. Not to light.

What Wes said!

If you plan on launching it or hot lapping it at the track, I suggest the dual friction disc. I overheated the kevlar disc launching hard and hot-lapping. It held fine on the way home after racing, but it would slip once I hit 2nd gear and slip the rest of the way down the track. Otherwise, I had to sit too long between runs to let it cool and it got irritating!

Think im going with a 13lb chromoly act flywheel, bypass neutral switch and act2600 clutch kit. The shop thats doing my car warned me not to go with the 2600 for risks of crankwalk but with all the reading ive done on here i dont think its an issue.

The other consideration is clutch pedal stiffness. The 2600 would piss me off in a DD in stop and go traffic. Mine is a weekend car and I've had a 2600, 2900 & 3200 in it, but I only put 3-4k miles on it per year. It might not bother you though...

I would recommend a stock flywheel resurfaced with a south bend clutch SS-Series pressure plate with TZ-Series sprung hub full face kevlar clutch disk kit, and an OEM TOB, clutch fork, TOB clip and pivot ball.

I have had great luck with my competition clutch. The clutch that was in the car before the competition was a spec. Both can take a beating! I like them both!! But OEM throwout bearing and competition now has a forged clutch fork. Stick with your stock flywheel just get it resurfaced.

ACT 2600 with street disc and a ACT streetlight flywheel. A properly broken in CFDF is slightly superior to the ACT for daily driving, but the ACT is superior for launches.

He would probably be fine with an XTR flywheel and Exedy clutch off Shep's site.

I personally went with a quartermaster.

Also, to the crank walkers.
