Clutch failure?

So I pulled out onto a road the other day, revved a little higher than i meant to, shifted to second, shifted to third and then bam- i heard a noise (wasnt very loud), the clutch pedal felt really light, wasnt any power to the wheels, and it wouldnt go into any gear.
I pulled off and it would go into gear when off, but if i tried to start it in gear it would stall and the gear would get stuck and be almost impossible to get out of gear. If i tried really hard to get it into gear while running it would inch forward. Had it towed to my mechanic but haven't heard from him yet.

Any ideas on what the problem is? Should I be shopping for a new clutch?

Please fill out your profile. It sounds like you broke the pressure plate. You won't know exatly what happened until you take it apart but it will need to come out and be replaced no matter what the problem is.

Is the clutch pedal coming back up on its own power?

yea if the clutch pedal goes to the ground and sinks down the it could be the master cylinder and air in the system. but if it comes up then i guess you could rule that out and go on to it being the actual clutch, fllywheel, pressure plate, etc.

Slave cylinders usually won't make a bang when they go out. Also he said the pressure is light so the fingers on the pressure plate are most likely broken. Or the disc broke.

Yes, the pedal comes back up on its own. The pedal just feels lighter than before.
