I just have a quick ?. Does the gas light run off of the sending unit or the float. Beacuse my gas gauge doesnt work, but my low fuel light works. Thanks in advance.

Im thinking the light is on the sending unit and the gauge is on the float. Not positive. I have the same sort of problem. Gauge works,but the light comes on at 1/2 tank. Never thought about fixing it yet.

The gauge uses the float. The warning light the silver sensor.

ok so i guess my float is jacked because my warning light works but not the fuel gauge. Is there anyway to test this? Maybe pulling up on the float and seeing if the gas gauge moves? Im just not sure if the cluster is messed or the float. thanks guys

The Factory Service Manual gives test procedures for the gas gauge.

Was this someting that was working and stopped?
Has the fuel pump been removed from the tank? It's common to hang the float putting the assembly back in.
Is the gauge reading empty, full, or stuck somewhere else?

I bought the car with it being stuck on empty, yes the pump has been removed fromt the tank (the carriage looks brand new). I need to get a new tank anyways because like 3 of the studs are broken, so if i fill it up it leaks, It looks like the previous owner made an attempt to silicone around the carriage so it wouldnt leak . I was just wondering if when I swap the tank I need to replace the whole fuel pump assembly. Oh and I dropped my repair manual into my oil drain pan when it was full of oil on accident. I will go to advanced auto on randall in a few min and scoop another.

Chiltons or whatever they sell at Advanced Auto are not the Factory Service Manual. Get a set of Mitsubishi or Chrysler manuals off eBay and the manual CD to back them up www.manualcd.com

You also don't need to replace the tank for 3 broken studs. People have drilled them out and replaced them or tapped the holes and used bolts, and some have really getto rigged it by using sheetmetal screws.
