i cleaned my lifters just like how it says on vfaq, and now then im done, when i start my car, it sounds like i threw a couple marbles under the valve cover and tried to start it. it does that for like 2 seconds, then it dies. what i did do was i messed with the crank pulley while uninstalling and installing the lifters to get better angles around the camshaft, should i not have done that? some of the lifters were in pretty bad shape, like all gunked up inside, but i cleaned them all out, and reinstalled them. one of the lifters, just didn't work, so i ordered ONE revised one from SBR (15 stock lifters and 1 revised lifter). could that be the problem too? it sounds like i left a tool in the motor on accident or something. somebody please help me. TIA

oh daym, so do you think it bent all my valves? if so, if i do a compression test, and my compression is low, does that 100% mean that my valves are bent?

i thought the lifters were suppose to be filled w/ oil when u actually start the car. same reason for why you should start it w/o the MPI fuse, like in the vfaq.com says, so that u can fill the lifters up with oil.

Sorry to say you probably did. Do a leak down test to make sure. Did you turn the crank ccw? You're suppose to rotate them cw. Good luck.

if you played with the camshaft pulley, did you turn it counterclockwise at any point? what exactly did you do there? maybe you threw off the valve timing so far that it won't even start and possibly bent some valves trying to start it the first time. was this your first time inside your engine because if so then I would have had a pro do the job.

Read it again, it says to prime them not to fill them. It specifically say to make sure to pump them out after you fill them.

oh no, does it look like i'll have to be replacing the valv stems and new lifters? or is there gonna have to be anything else? how much are new valve stems anyways

Do a compression test first. Maybe you're lucky that you turn the crank ccw and threw off timing. Sorry Dude.

either way, if i threw off timing or bent my valves, wouldn't i get low compression either way? and if i did throw off timing (cuz i did turn it ccw some), how do i get it back on the right track?

you are probably going to have to remove the timing belt and readjust all the timing marks to make sure they are correct. I would also open up the valve cover again just to do visual check inside before you do anyhting else.

i took all my lifters out again, and re-checked all my lifters, cleaned them out again, pumped them clean, put them back in, checked all my timing marks, and they are all exactly on, for each one. but the car is still doing the same thing. i had enough time to check two cylinders for compression so far, and so far, they both have it, so i don't know what's wrong.

ok, here's an update on my compression test: 192 - 200 - 182 - 186. with those numbers, is it even possible to have a bent valve? i check my timing using the (long screwdriver in cylinder #1 at TDC technique) and my timing is absolutely dead on. so now im thinking that its not my valves or my timing. could messed up lifters cause my car not to run and sound like there are marbles under my valve cover?

u mean did i mix up my spark plug wires? no, cuz i marked them before i took them off. im gonna try and replace the rest (15) of my lifters w/ the revised ones, hopefully that will do it. if anyone has any thoughts on this, please let me know before i spend 150 bucks on something that i don't necesarrily need right now w/ money i don't necisarrilly have either. but if not, then i'll go ahead and put those in, hoping they will work, i'll let you guys know how it goes.

i started it up again today, same thing, sounds like huge marbles under my valve cover, and it turns over, then dies. well i checked my timing (dead on) and compression tested it (really good), so i gambled, i started it again, this time, i gave it gas, i kept on giving it gas every time it tried to die on me, eventually, i settled down and idled, roughly i might add. i gave it a really really easy run, the ticks from the lifters were still there, then slowly, everything began to dissappear. no lifter tick, no more marble, perfect idle, and everything was great, and god rested on the 7th day. ok, there it is, an update for you guys that wondered what was wrong. i guess the lifters just had to get use to it or something like that. iono, im just glad it works now. thanks everybody for their input.

It is suppose to clatter for q while since you installed it empty. Mine clattered for a while then went away eventually. Hayne's manual would have told you this right of the bat. Good luck. :)

That's why you're suppose to fill them with oil and drain them before you install them.

i did do the oil, and draining process. and it wasn't just a clatter, it was as if the whole head was shaking, getting hammered by marbles.
