I am already mad that Mitsu would put a Chrysler engine in their cars but besides that has anyone heard about the head gaskets for the n/t engine? Well if you haven't then I'll tell ya, I have recently found out that with that 420a engine, the head gaskets go out on daily drivers somewhere around 60,000 and again at 120,000 and so on. And supposedly this will happen no matter what is done to fix them. It is just a chronic issue with the engine type. I was told this by my mechanic who is now fixing my own gasket.

You didn't buy a Mitsubishi with a Chrysler engine in it. You bought a DSM.

The original headgaskets do go out. But if you put a multi-layer steel headgasket, you won't have a problem with it leaking ever again. The original headgasket was composite, revised several times and never stopped leaking. When the gasket was finally revised to the MLS gasket, the oil leaks from the headgasket stopped. Any additional leaks were from the cam sensor seal, rear main oil seal, or an oil pressure sending unit after a while.

Every manufacturer takes a different approach to how components have to be removed to do different repairs. It's just a matter of learning how to deal with the variances.

My brother has a 2gnt and he recently did a head job on his 68k~ and the thing that causes the oil leak has somethign to do with the right rear bolt (if you are looking at it from the front of the engine bay) is too long (or the hole in the block is not deep enough) sometimes and if its too long it can bottom out and not get torqued correctly. The other thing about that very same bolt is that the bolt hole in the head is a oil journal. Yes I said oil journal, oil flows along side the bolt. The supposed fix for the problem is to grind 2 threads off the bottom of the bolt that goes into that hole. or just buy some ARP head bolts :thumb:

As stated, your Eclipse isn't a Mitsubishi. It's an American-built DSM from Illinois. Some used a Mitsubishi engine and transmission, but they're still American cars.

Which is where some of us think the troubles come from.
