Hey guys, I just recently got rid of my built 2g for something that I could upgrade on my own in my own time. I got a 91 Talon TSI AWD with minimal mods. Well a few days after I got the car it decided it was going to blow the head gasket. So i tore it down and started scraping gasket off and noticed there was a chunk out of the coolant port into the #1 cylinder. Do you guys think, from your experience, this is worth trying to get machined or should I just let the car sit for a few weeks and try to save up for a new head. I am unemployed at the moment so I really need this car on the road. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

That is pretty crappy. It looks repairable, but the biggest problem is the damage goes into the combustion chamber. It would have to be welded, and then machined flat again.

You may be able to pick up a used head for what the machine work would cost you. It just depends on the machine shop. The guy you should ask is BogusSVO: DSM Forums - View Profile: BogusSVO

As long as it looks repairable. Oddly enough I have access to a full cnc machine shop that does this kind of work. Free of charge for me at least. I just needed to know if it looked like it was beyond repairable. I did hear from a few guys that it might be able to be tig welded then machined down but no one was really sure.
 
Yes, that head can be fixed. You can see how it goes and have it tig'ed cold. then surface it and bolt it back down.

Make sure that they grind out the contaminated metal from the damaged area, just make it shiny.

The better way, for a head, is to tear it apart and then heat the head up and weld it hot.
