Checking out a Talon in a few hours.

Ok i'm going to look at a 95 Eagle Talon AWD with 135k miles. Wanted price is 5500, going to offer about 4500 or so, I only have 5k to spend. But i'm taking a compression gauge to do a compression test, and i'm going to ask about recalls, check the CV Boots or whatever that is. Take it for a test drive. Anything else I need to check, ask about, look at? Oh and how do you check for play on the turbo?

To check for play on the turbo, just take the intake pipe off and turn the turbine wheel...if it moves at all in a funky direction, then it has play. Good luck!

A little play is to be expected, but make sure the fins are still on the turbo as well. Please don't try testing this stuff while the engine is hot though. Check to make sure there aren't any bolts missing on anything, check the motormounts, make sure it has had a recent timing belt change. Good luck

Stand behind the car when starting up to check for smoke.

Ask about the timing belt/water pump. Find out if the tensioner, balance belt, etc were changed as well.

Radio code if it has the factory unit.. Its annoying when you find out you dont have it.

Don't pay anywhere near $5k. I got my '96 TSI AWD with 80k miles for $5200. Offer like $4200.

Be sure to check for crankwalk!!! Does the clutch pedal drop or lose pressure immediately after or during a hard left hand turn? Also listen for ticking from the front of the engine when the clutch pedal is depressed, the CAS & its pickup sometimes contact each other if crankwalk is very moderate. Also, sometimes idle drops rpms when the clutch is depressed if there's c-walk.

yeah in august of 05 i bought my 98 tsi awd with 89k for 4200..i work at a dealership..and right now the GALVES book which is what we appraise cars at has my car for about1500 trade in value.. so if its a regular person selling it..and its not modded offer like 3500 maybe even 3 but im cheap soo i dunno..good luck man..

WTF?> Most 1g's go for way over that! I bought my 91awd for over $4k...

Make sure you have the tools to take off the plugs first, a compression test won't work unless you do it correctly...

Also, is this guy really going to stand around while you take off the intake and check out the turbo and shit>?

Why not drive it over to a mechanic and have them do a full inspection for like $50 or less...Couldn't hurt

Ah well I checked it out. Bottom line it was a piece of crap. AC was screwed, they HAD to remove the belt. Not taken care of properly. Ran great, but all the minor stuff, she said she wouldn't take more than 4800, and i'm like...uh huh...sure. But yah i'm TRYING to get ahold of a guy that wants 5900 for a CLEAN 97 w/ 105k, hopefully go check that out tomorrow. Anybody know any good 2g Turbos in the So Cal area for sale under 5kish, with Manual, AWD prefered.
