92 Talon Tsi, the car was parked in the garage for 4 years without being run. When I put it away, it did not have an idle surge, and when I got it back out, it did. But, it's changed...

At first, it would idle surge while cold, going from 500 to (I forget) over 1000 about once per second. But then after running the car a bunch of times, pulling it in and out of the garage to work on it, etc. it sat for about a week, then I took it out and drove it. Idle surge gone. It would idle at 750 with only tiny fluctuations of about 1 tick mark in either direction but no rhythmic surge with that.

But then, I started driving it around, across town, etc. and a little idle surge popped up when hot, at stoplights, etc. This one was smaller, bouncing over and under 750 by a couple tick marks. Or sometimes, it would oscillate, such that it would be larger like 400 to 1000 but then as you let it settle, it would creep down to being small or simply even itself out completely and go away. Or sometimes the low end of the surge would make the car stall.

The car has the old-school Apexi SuperAFC and a flashed ECU with the "Todd Day" mods from way back. I have a fresh ECMlink v3 ECU to go in, which of course I would also rip out the Apexi and fix the spliced wires from that. Now, my main question is this : should I find and fix the idle surge first (Terry's Talon Troubleshooting) as the car is now, or would the logging capabilities of the new ECU be extremely helpful in finding the idle surge? I think there is also a datalogger around here somewhere (a Palm Pilot) for the old-school setup, but I'm not sure what that would be logging and I'll have to rip apart the basement to find it.

Opinion?

Completely up to you whether you want to wait for the new set up or not. Idle surge is more air bypassing the throttle plate while the throttle plate is closed than expected.

You can test for and repair boost leaks and check that your ISC is physically moving the way it is supposed to without any special monitoring equipment or logging software.
