whats up, i have a 91 5speed tsi awd i have a check engine light, and i just got the car registered. so i tried to reset the ecu by unhooking the negative batt. terminal. after a min or so the check engine comes on and i was wondering if theres a why i can get it off for a while.???

some background on the light..... the light is not a constant light it will go on and off from what i think i know the car has a missfire(at least thats what i think im hearing? changed wires but not plugs so i will change those..

and i went to autozone to read the code and guess what they only have obd2

so does anybody know a place like that,, that can check obd1.. theres an advanced auto some where around here but havnt tried them thanks for the help

Most parts stores won't check obd1, only obd2. From my experience, most shops charge around $90 just to read the code.

You can read your codes for free by following this method: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-tuning-ecu/319844-1g-code-reader-cel-code-reader.html

Also a logger or ECMlink will allow you to read your codes as well as MANY other inputs.

Hope this helps!

yea it does... the loan a tool at autozone would loan me a volt meter right?

and any idea why the light came right back on after disconnecting the neg battery term for about an hour

and about dsm/ecmlink when i get the 500 or something to spend ill get one

Not that I can see from their site: Loan-a-Tools | AutoZone.com

If the code has to do with the ECU not getting the proper voltage from one or more of it's sensors then it will keep reappearing regardless of you disconnecting the battery.

I wouldn't assume anything.

If you have a Harbor Freight near you they have Digital Multi Meters from $5 - $20.

Can also get a 12v buzzer from Radio Shack and hook that up and count the long and short buzzes to get code.

yea but where are the wires thats why im asking it looks the same but i just want to make sure

Nah thats not it. It is a square white box about size of a quarter with a red and black wire coming off of it. Should cost about 3-4 bucks. They have it in there drawer setup with the capacitors, resistors, ect. Think its labeled as a "12 volt electrical buzzer"

You don't really want the white box one, you want the one in the link RS 273-059.

It draws less current and makes a single tone.
