Keep in mind I bought the car last Sunday (2/17)
Im not having any luck finding out what is causing this. Two days ago I noticed my CEL light would come on for a split second at high rpm's before shift. I dropped the car off at Japan Performance here in Greenville. They said that besides the oil leaks my engine is in great condition for it year.
Last night we installed an EVO XIIII Blow Off Valve, and on the way home I blow it clear off shifting 3rd to 4th.
I also noticed a couple of tubes being held in place by electrical tape... which is causing issues now.
Any advice?

A cel at high rpms usually indicates knock. See if there are any saved codes and I recommend getting a boost and wideband gauge and see whats going on. What hoses have electtical tape? Need to put hose clamps on and might help with boost leaks and other issues depending on what they are for.

How would I go about checking saved codes?
I currently have a boost and air/fuel gauge.
One of the hoses that has electrical tape that basicly melted off last night was connected to the back, top left side of the engine. Im planning on replace that whole hose today once I get off of work.

Did the previous owner say anything about the car having an aftermarket chip installed,, or possibly dsm link. That could possiby be a shift light. Does it come on at the same rpm every time?

No, If I could take the car back to that ballet ###got I would! There are multiple issues that he didnt mention about the car. I didnt start noticing them until I was already half way home (I drove 4 hours one way to buy this car). I was planning on doing some work on the car, just not the day of the purchase.

I dont think it is an aftermarket chip. Mostly everything is stock except the BOV we put in yesterday. The light comes on at different times. Last night it came on and stayed on in 4th at about 3k rpm. If I accelerated or decelerated it would go off.

There is a evo 14?

Off the top of my head the only thing I can think of is knock, but the only way I know of that will flash the cel for knock is with a aftermarket EPROM chip or link. I would pop the ecu out and see if it is EPROM, it may very well have a burnt chip.

Then again now that I notice its a 98 you should have a black box flashable ecu, and I don't know much about them but I would say there is a way to flash cel for knock with that.

Evo VIIII... Sorry :ohdamn:
Ill check the chip when I get home and get back to you on that

Is there a cable located near your radio? One that you could hook up to a computer? Seems like knock cel from link to me.

None that I notice, There is a hook up next to the radio under the dash but I would have to look at my cables I have and see if there would be a way I can hook it to the computer.

Everyone keeps saying "Knock"... Whats that mean?

A lot of possibilities here I would go by an auto parts store and have them pull your trouble codes and monitors that make the check engine light come on. See it there are any stored codes in there. I am not familiar with black boxes either but I have had my cel on at higher rpm from the o2 signals to close as well until I did the down stream work around. Does this car have the cat converter on it?

That is tricky as the obd2 system that turns the check engine light on only does so after it is out of spec for a while. Meaning I am not sure how long it's knocking before light comes on, at regular usage soft on the throttle you should be able to get the car to somewhere to read the codes and monitors but again without knowing what's causing it, it's a risk.
