Cat needed to pass emission (legally) What should I out on?

So I would like to put a high flow cat of some kind into my turbo-back 3" megan exhaust but I don't want to weld in a tiny guy and add a bunch of restrictions.

As long as i get a legit "high-flow" cat like a magnaflow or something that is the same size as my exhuast it shouldn't create much restriction and should make my CEL stay off correct?

That would work and not create much restriction but I dont know if it will lower the smog levels enough for a tailpipe test. Also depends on how tolerant your emissions laws are.
 
OBD-II in conecticut is CEL dependent only

as long as it makes my car run like it should and makes the CEL go away it should pass without a problem
 
You could try the extended o2 sensor bung plus aluminum foil around the tip to trick the cat test. I've never tried it but I've read it's worked for some folks.
 
That should have you covered then, Does the 98 have a second 02 sensor after the cat like most cars do? If its supposed to you will need to add that back into your exhaust to get the CEL to go away.
 
Yes it does have the second 02 sensor. I am hoping that this works.

what would be the appropriate amount to pay for a exhuast shop to weld the cat in?

Is there any way to be sure that it will filter out enough to make the back o2 sensor happy and kill the CEL?
 
your cat dosnt bolt up to the exhaust? mine does 97. that way you can bolt on a test pipe and take it off to pass emissions not that i have to do that. Its always good to know people!
 
it is a straight pipe practically from the downpipe to the exhaust tip...pretty awesome actually, a shame to cut it up but it would be nice to have CEL gone and still functional
