The car: 95 tsi awd
small problem:

ok so i have stumbled into an article "This is a camshaft angle sensor (CAS), sometimes called the crankshaft angle sensor."
The article states that 1g and later 2g dont have a crank sensor but a cam sensor. is this true?

Ok if thats true i have a 95 tsi and i have a cam sensor. The sensor is located on the rear cam passangers side under a triangle metal plate. the car has had modifications done. If i am mistaken then all my problems lie in my crank that does not have a sensor hooked up to it.

Why i am writing this petty question, The car turnsover but does not fire.
I bought the car used with a broken timing belt. Replaced the cylinder head, gaskets, belts turbo. Under the hood the car has gone through some modifications before the belt broke that eliminated the use of certian sensors. The cylinder head i got was remanufactured, funny thought crossed my mind, the new heads in the cam did not have a spot for the CAS, for which i had to switch the camshaft from my old head due to the fact the refurbished one did not have any input for the CAS.

I am just wondering about the CAS question. I am still going through disgnostics on the nofire. I will repost later if more questions arise.

Thanks

C

si.. the CAS is hooked up where a normal distributor for a 4 cylinder would go.. the side of the head.. the other models use a crank sensor instead..

1G cars only have a Cam angle sensor, and 1995 2G cars have both a cam and crank angle sensor. On a 1G car the CAS is located on the passengers side of the rear cam. On the 1995 2G the CAS is located on the drivers side of the rear cam and is integrated into the cam gear. The Crank angle sensor is on the drivers side of Crank under the timing belt cover. Is it possible that you might have gotten a remanufactured head off of a 93-94 7 bolt? Do you have any pictures you can post?

here are the pics, the first is the CAS (cam), This is on the new cylinder head.

Now the Tach manual wasnt to clear on where the CAS (crank) was, if there is one, so i took 2 pictures of intrest. The first has multiple wires. The second only has one wire, its black with a stripe through it, also it is not connected to anything but could lead down to the area.

As for the 6 bolt on a 7 bolt? Will this make a difference if it is the case? Every thing seemed to go back together after i replaced the cylinder head except for the 1 cam shaft that i stole out of the head with bent valves.

This might help you...
thanks

Ok so the new question is, could the previous owner installed the later 2g CAS and no longer needed the crank sensor or would a modification of the CAS still require both?
If a picture is needed of wiring i will edit one in, tomarrow morning when its light out.

Hey guys thats for the help its actually getting me some where unlike other sites.

I believe you need to swap your spark plug wires. When using a 1G or 97-99 CAS with a 95 ECU the firing order is reversed.

Try swapping your 1 and 4 spark plug wires onto your 2 and 3 coil pack and vice versa. So no you should have plugs 2+3 on the 1+4 coil, and 1+4 on the 2+3 coil if that makes any sense.

Heres a link...

Also do you know your getting fuel spark and compression?

Your mystery wire (if it's a single wire) goes to a noise filter capacitor which is a small aluminum can and is supposed to be bolted on the intake mani driver's side. The CPS wire comes out of the rear side of the TB cover halfway down.
