I drove my car in last night parked it over night and today it won't start. When I try turning over the car tries to start, sometimes I can hear the engine fire up slightly but it isn't starting completely.

First I tried jumping it because I thought the battery might have discharged overnight, but that didn't do anything.

The next thing I did was get some more gas for my car because my driveway is on a steep incline so I thought it wasn't getting enough fuel. I still had the same problem.

I disconnected my fuel rail and made sure it was getting enough fuel to the fuel rail and tested the pressure coming from the fuel pump. Everything checked out there.

After checking the fuel pressure I took out the spark plug to see if they were messed up. The spark plug was black w/ carbon build up so I changed the spark plugs, stilil nothing.

At this point I don't know what is going and would like to get some suggestions on what it might be.

(P.S. timing is fine)

Thanks for looking,

Tim

check out my thread "Dsm wisemen please help" Im going through something very similar, im almost to a solution as well, its worth a look.

Check for spark.

I'm dealing with a no start myself. I picked up a spark tester at Schucks the other day (I shopped around, Schucks stocks the light bulb kind I wanted). This tool is cheep (under $10) and saved me from removing the head before I needed to. Everyone thought it was a blown head gasket.

Spark tester, good tool for your collection.

Good luck.

Dunno what my options are at this point. I checked for spark by having the wires open while cranking and having my girlfriend look at it. She said there was red spark coming from the wires. I don't think I have a bad coil pack but maybe a cam position sensor (which is responsible for spark/fuel timing?).

The timing belt seems loose but when I crank it over it doesn't make a noise (hitting valves or piston) so i'm assuming I am still timed, would a broken balance shaft belt cause no start for the car?

I am just puzzled because the car was running fine the previous night, I changed the fuel pump and fuel regulator thinking it was that.....Also is there a way to test the spark besides visually?

I changed the crank angle sensor and the Cam angle sensor, still nothing.....I am going to get a coil pack to put in pretty soon....if that's what does it I am going to be angry... If the coil pack doesn't work maybe i will change the ignition transistor. I am going to do a compression test to see if my engine blew (hopefully not), but I will keep you updated to tell you the progress on my car...If anyone has any suggestions I am all ears.

Tim

Do you have a turbo timer?

At one time my car was having diffuculty starting. In the morning it will fire up fine and in the afternoon, nothing but a click. I changed plugs, got a new battery and thought of changing the starter.

I took out the turbo timer and the car started the first try. My car never failed to start since I disconnected that Greddy TT.

Maybe it is dumping too much fuel in the cylinders via a bad regulator or something. Anyway If you got a buddy w/ a logger he can check the codes (if there are any) I know a coolant temp sensor it takes a lot of cranks to fire but I am not sure it would cause a no start condition. Lastly I would do a compression test to see if it relocated itself!

It's not a crank angle sensor, it's not a camshaft position sensor, or ignition coil pack......I am going to check the MAS and the MFI relay afterthat.....My friend gave me his old ECU if that is the last step that I take. Other than that I am very frustrated....I am getting fuel to the rail and my FPR is fine. Thanks for the suggestions....I hope it's nothing really stupid or I am going to cry.

UPDATE:

So i pulled my rail off to see if my injectors were spraying, and found out that they weren't. I tested my MFI relay and I was getting .7 ohm resistance on the pins 1 and 2 which should be around 70 ohmes, so I ordered a MFI relay from NAPA and hopefully that will fix the problem. It is a shame that I have to put my timing belts and acessory belts back in for a stupid relay. Hopefully this solves my problem.

Hey, I had a problem where my car would try to turn over but not all the way. I changed my plugs and wires and also the fuel filter. And still nothing so I put tape over my exhaust pipe exit and it started right up. You could maybe give that a shot if nothing else.

Looks like I had some bad information in the haynes manual. For a 94-95 the MFI relay is a single block, for a 96-98 it is two seperate relays, a fuel pump relay and the MFI relay. This confused me for a quite a while until I looked at the chiltons wiring diagrams. I ordered the MFI relay from Mitsubishi. I am getting 12 volts to the relay with no problems. Hopefully the relay is bad and will fix my no start condition. If anyone else has suggestions please feel free to give advice. If replacing the relay doesn't do anything I am going to take it into the dealership to get it fixed.

I am going to unplug my clutch safety switch just to make sure it isn't the switch that went bad. I'm thinking it isn't because my fuel economy of my car went down the crapper when it died and it was running too rich. Still searching for Ideas.....

CAR IS RUNNING WOOT WOOT!!!!!!!!!!! IT WAS A BAD CAM POSITION SENSOR............ those jerks gave me a bad sensor to begin with. I am going to go to the dealer from now on...........
