so the car (99 gst) was having misfire issues. so i changed out the coil pack. went for test drive then it sputtered again, backfired, and just shut off. checked everything and it all seems fine. i tried to start it up but it would only crank but not turn over. i ordered a new engine control unit and put it on. now it won't even crank. any ideas. thanks.

are you saying the engine will not turn over now?? if so i assume you have checked the obvious. make sure the battery has enough charge first and that the battery terminals are tight and corrosion free. then you will need to use a test light or multimeter and check that the starter motor and solenoid are getting 12 volts when the key is put in the start position. If you are just getting a clicking sound when you turn the key it's most likely the starter solenoid. You will also need to check that you are getting 12 volts to the ignition switch. If you are getting 12 volts to the starter and ignition switch and it wont do anything you might have a faulty starter or solenoid. The starter motor pinion sometimes gets jammed in the ring gear on the flywheel. check everything that you were around while installing the new ECU. Loose or broken connectors and things left unplugged.

As for the backfire you had before, there could be several things to cause that. have you checked the basic ignition components?? spark plugs, wires, etc. Boost leaks and vaccuum leaks can also cause misses and backfiring problems.

If the car will turn over but not crank check if you are getting fuel to the rail. Also do the same with the plugs. You can take the plugs out of the car one at a time and leave one plugged into the plug wire and touch the electrode to ground as someone is cranking over the engine. If you get sparks you are getting fire to that cylinder. Do the same for each cylinder.

So I got some updates. 1st, the starter froze up so put a new one on. The car actually cranks but still wouldn't turn over. Changed out the CAS, nothin. Did some more investigating and found that one of the wires on the CPS was ripped out by the timing belt. Balance shaft was also off by about 7 teeth and timing belt was off about 3 teeth. Good times. I'll do what I can and post back.

OMG,Thats not good. Hopefully you'll get a little lucky and not have a major problem. If I'm not mistaken the t-belt has to jump 5-8 teeth in most instances for the clearance to become too small and valves start smashing pistons. While you're in there fixing that you need to figure out what caused the belts to jump in the first place. That is a problem that must be fixed, next time it might just throw the t-belt. If you need some help with it just post back and I'm sure there will be plenty of people happy to help.:thumb:
