Hey all, this is my first post but, I have been lurking on these forums for about 2 years now. Anyways I have a 98 gst that is automatic it has a lot of upgrades too. Well these past few months When I fist try to start my car in the morning it has usually taken 2-3 tries to get the car started but, once the motor has been warmed up. I could easily start it on the first try. Today I drove to my sister's house and I went inside for 10 minutes then when I went out to leave I tried to start my car and it didn't crank over. All my lights came on and my fuel pump was working because I could hear it making that whining noise but, No crank what does this problem sound like? My starter>? I have new plugs and new wires and my mass is new along with my coil pack. I even tried to jump start it although I knew it wouldn't do the trick. HELP ME!

It could be the starter but i would check simple things before you dive into that. Check the battery cables make sure they don't have a lot of corrosion on them or aren't frayed or anything.

I already checked them and they are good to go. I heard that the cold weather could cause the battery to not put out enough voltage to start the car. However, if it was the battery would my headlights, stereo, S-afc, and fuel pump still be getting power>? I have my mechanic coming over tomorrow to install a new starter. He is only charging me 70 bux for the part AND LABOR. THAT IS a hell of a deal the starter is out of a wrecked car that is why it is so cheap. I just hope that is the problem. I have dumped enough of my green backs into this ride. I love this car but, sometimes I just wanna set it on fire and laugh like a MAD MAN as it burn.

The battery and cold weather could be the problem but since you tried to jump it that eliminated that. Good luck and hopefully the starter will fix it.

a bit off topic... but i must congratulate you for having a great mechanic. 80 quids for parts and labor. the stealership where i live wants 250 + a whole day's labor and my right arm for a new starter.

I agree he is a damn good mechanic too. He specializes in DSM's and if you live in the OKLAHOMA CITY area and you need work done for a really good price message me and I will give you his number because he is just starting out and he needs all the buiseness he can get. Now back to the subject at hand does anyone else know what the problem might be?

not sure off the temp there but here in nj if i leave my 2g sit for afew days the battery goes dead. its a brand new battery! i notice in the cold its harder to crank which is expected. my starter is new so i know its not that. off the subject when i did my motor swap in the 2g i put the ground wire to the starter on the wrong bolt and as soon as i would crank the car over everything would die! thats not the problem in your case but who knows maybe i helped someone out !

hey if you want to find out if it is the starter just get under the car and hit the starter while someone turns it over that will tell you if that is your starter because it will start

if you can, pull the top iming belt cover off and see if it is moving while you crank. it is easy to do so you have nothing to lose by checking it. if the timing belt is toast it will not let the car start and it will not move while cranking. something you always wnat to check, not usually the problem but since it is so easy to check you mine as well.

take the starter off and take it to autozone or whatever you have. They should be able to test it. It isn't really that difficult to remove the starter and reinstall it. It can be a little tight fit to get your hand up in there and all, but it isn't that bad. I had mine out in about 10 minutes.
