My car won't crank over, I havent started it in a week. When I try to start it just makes a click and a whirlo noise. I have a new battery and starter. The ecu looked good a few weeks ago cause I got a used eprom one and my car wroked before with it in. The voltage at the battery is 12.5v and the starter is 12.4v when the car is off. When we try to crank it over the voltage at the starter goes down to 5.5v. When switched around the fuses to check them and nothing changed. The ignition fuse is the one for the starter correct? Any one have any ideas? It's a 5spd too.

Is your starter the one that was in there originally or did you replace it? I remember reading that a starter for a manual car and an automatic are different. Also, where is the whirling noise coming from? Is it from the starter spinning? Can you take lower shield off your tranny and see the flywheel spin as your cranking the motor over?

The motor doesnt crank over, thats the problem. The starter is brand new and the correct one. I can move the flywheel with a screwdriver so the motors not frozen. The problem is the starter is not getting enough power when I try to crank over the engine and I cant figure out why.

I unplugged the clutch safety switch and it did nothing. I'm thinking maybe my new alternator might be bad too, so I'm going to pull it and test it. Anyone have any ideas?

Your alternator shouldn't matter if you're trying to start the car. The starter is run off the battery. Could it be that your new battery is defective? Have you tested the starter? Might be a pain in the butt but can you try to push start it? I'm curious if it'll even run. You never did say where the "whirlo" noise was coming from.
