I bought a 97 Gst FWD turbo 5 speed. When I first got this car, the transmission was shot. Car started fine, just that it wouldn't move. So I took it out with a used 95 gst tranny. I used the same fly wheel but with a different clutch and pressure plate. I took the fly wheel to the shop to get it resurface. Then just threw on the clutch and pressure plate on.
I put back everything like it was suppose to with the right Torque. Went to go and start the car. Nothing cranks over. But I do hear the starter trying to engage. So I take the starter to checker auto parts and ask them to do a bench test. Starter came back fine. Put back the starter and same exact noise. Like the starter is stuck. I can also feel it engage. I know the 12+ side of the starter resistor is getting power, and I know that the starter is getting grounded.
Also I know it cant be my ignition because when I try and start the car, I can hear my fuel pump running. What could it be?

Oh yea when I also first got the car. The guy told me that the starter relay was shot, and what he did to fix it was that he just jumped the relay straight to the 12volt source. Btw I checked all my fuses in the engine bay.

THANKS:D:rocks:

Well first I would get rid of the jumper wire and replace it with a good relay. Then if the problem still exists, are you positive that the flywheel is the exact same size as the one you previously had on the car?

Are you sure it's the correct Starter? Any reason to believe the guy swapped it out? The reason I ask, the Automatic and manual starters are different. Also if possible - Hook up starter as you normally would and leave unbolted from bellhousing, Hold in hand TIGHTLY - The start will jump (scare the sh*t outta you!) and keep fingers away from starter gear _it comes out about 1/2-5/8 of an inch when energized. Anyhow, point Im making is see if with the existing wiring jumper mess, everything is working correctly, then if so, reinstall and try again. If it tries to engage but starter binds, you have either the wrong starter, flwheel damaged, or engine locked up. Using a ratchet and correct socket, put car in Neutral or Park and turn engine over by hand, make sure it turns, if not - You got bigger problems then a starter!! If it does then remove the small inspection plate cover on lower bellhousing by Oilpan and rotate engine (use friends help) and while rotating engine watch the teeth on the flywheel to make sure they are ALL there and intact! If you have a few damaged teeth you can make due, just rotate the broken teeth away from the starter gear engagement point, so it can get the engine moving, before it get's to that spot on the flywheel... Make sense.
Good Luck

Yea its exactly the same. All I did was I took it out and got it resurfaced. Only the clutch and pressure plate are different.

It should be the 5 speed starter. I started the car before I even bought it. But it started. Maybe Im not getting enough amps to the starter. I've about had it already with this car. Im might just jump start it :D

Anything is possible with these cars... Jump it and if it starts and runs, drive to your nearest large body of water and jump! Make sure you have full coverage Insurance first and policy up to date. LOL

Well hell, in that case just drive in any direction until the road runs out - Jump in the sand for a safe landing. Before long it'll become part of a new reef.
