i got a 1991 laser, and we just got the tranny back and installed when we turned the car over it ran for about 5-10 minutes and died. some weird smell came from under the dash somewhere and smoke too. we checked all the electrical and everything seems fine. the engine turns over but won't start. we took the distributer apart and there was a crack in it(would this stop it from running?) this is a 1.8 liter engine and i need help ASAP.

I Had the same problem and and it WAZ THE DISTRIBUTER when i turned the key origionally i got NO SPARK!!! I thought my ecu went bad. BUY A DISTRIBUTER OFF EBAY FOR AROUND 30-45 shipped. -steve-

NO NO NO...dont listen to them...its your ecu. the caps leaked on the motherboard and killed it. the smell, smells like seafood right? take ur ecu out, clean the motherboard with a q-tip and acetone and replace the caps. its 5 bucks on ebay. mine did the EXACT same thing. trust me this is definately your problem.

^^^^ I agree! But if it isn't heres what eles it may be.

fuel or fire. If your turning over its not fire.......

(or by some chance its electric. problems but in most cases its the fuel or fire logic)

Good Luck

It is def. his ECU. Get a buddy to swap ecu's with you and see if your car runs. These old cars have a tendency to have leaky caps. When your caps go, it does not "kill" the motherboard. Everything can be repaired. See if Jeff O. is still replacing caps... www.dsmchips.com.
