So, I bought a project car. Big mistake. On to the issue!

Car: 1997 TSI AWD @ ~127,000 miles

Relevant Mods:
6 Bolt Installed at ~91,000 miles
Engine freshened up with new rings and bearings, all tolerances were within OEM ranges
EvoIII B16G
MLS Head Gasket
Timing Belt (done @ ~125,000 miles ago)
Thermal Catback
ACT 2600
ACT Light Weight Flywheel
Dejon Hard Intercooler Piping

Summary: Mechanic replaced TPS and MAS on the TSI because it would not idle. Car ran great, ECU was kicked, and now it turns over but will not start.

Detailed Story:

  • Flew to PA, bought car, drove back to Ohio
  • On the drive back the car died
  • The only shop around replaced the MAS, car drove fine but seemed sluggish. Made it back home.
  • Once home I removed the SAFCII and 650cc's, replaced with 1g injectors and all new OEM injector seals. I also remove the 16g, but couldn't fine a 14b or T25 in good enough condition to warnt buying, so the 16g went back on
  • Started car for the first time in 2 months
  • The car would not idle on its own most of the time, if it did it idled at 250ish RPMs
  • Took car to mechanic friend. He said the "new" MAS that was put on was bad. Another MAS went on as well as a new TPS
  • The new MAS and/or TPS fixed the problem and the car ran great, according to the mechanic
  • His tech that was working on it took it for a final test drive, still ran good. He took it back to the garage, when he got out his foot hit the ECU (it was on the driver floor at the time) and the car died
  • Now when the key is turned it just rolls over and will not start

I have no idea where to go from here. I've double and triple checked all the fuses, but everything seems fine. Should I replace the ECU? Could something else be causing the problem besides the ECU?

Help is much appreciated

Check the connectors at the ecu. Make sure the connectors are tight and no wires are damaged. If you can, borrow a working ecu and swap it in your car.

I just checked the pins, all look to be as straight as they were the ECU was made. The wires look to be fine, even where they meet the plastic clips that plug into the ECU. I also popped the top off of the ECU and the board looks to have no physical damage.

I'll try getting my hands on another ECU.

Welp, I got my hands on another ECU and the same thing happened. Apparently the ECU isnt getting power...:notgood:

ECUs don't do well on the floor. Like stated before the ECU needs to be properly grounded.

Sounds like your having a continuous problem with the same sensors, I'd be suspicious of the wiring. Double check all wiring, verify that grounds are in good state, and that you are getting power where it needs to be.

2 months of sitting can kill your battery if you have a big enough parasitic draw(dome light for example), test/charge your battery.
