so yesterday my started went in my 97 gsx 5 speed..when i bought the car it came with a spare starter that was good so i put that in...everything was bolted back up and as i put the cables on the battery i saw a spark from where i put the starter so i took the cables back off the battery and took the starter back out...here it turned out the power wire to the starter where the little rubber piece is to cap over on the nut you tighten was touching the starter...i taped it up so there was no more contact that put everything together started up the car it was fine...letting it run for 10 min or so to warm up everything was good and before i jumped into my ar it started idling like crap around 500 or so rpms and surging from about to stall to 500ish rpms...then the car stalled out and my turbo time would go off for the 30 seconds it was supposed to then the fan kicked on and stays on until the car shuts off...and now before i go to start the car i turn the ignition on and the fan kicks right on...what could have happened...

Did you disconnect the batter before attempted to swap out the starter ? I've heard of terrible ECU shorting issues from rachets arching on the body because one neglected to disconnect the battery. I'd suggest disconnecting the battery, cranking over the car a few times (full drain system) and letting it sit for an hour or so.

no not at all after i put the starter in i let the car warm up for about 10 minutes and when i was about to leave the shop my car started sounding like it was going to stall out and was surging from almost cutting out to 500ish rpms...i have no clue what it is

This happened to be kinda, once.

First, i know it sounds stupid but check your alternator fuse. If that goes out everything goes crazy haha.
Second, Check your vacuum lines that is usually the culprit for idling.
Third, make sure that if the starter needs to be grounded, that it is. That can make a huge difference.

well its obviously something electrical and if u saw a spark 99.9% of the time u blew a fuse. so maybe check all the fuses? even the ones that have nothing to do with it like the window fuse and all.
