Hi all, new to the DSM forum. I've searched the forums quite a bit but didn't see any answers to my questions but if I've missed something please don't flame...
With my son nearing driving age and being into street rodding, etc. myself, I'm looking at the potential of an import build. There's DSM down the street that has been sitting for many years. I'm contemplating using it for a father/son build. I've done some creative research without confronting the owner(s). It's a 1990 Eclipse GS 5 speed with 144K. I've heard that the motor is blown. The car is not beat to shreds but it needs work.
Want to clear some questions before I make any possible approach (knowing I'll nearly get it for free or it's not going to happen). I believe being a GS it's a 1.8 instead of the 2.0. Of course, I want to put the 2.0 and possibly a turbo in it (at some point). Here are my questions:
1) Did the 1.8 and 2.0 use the same block? Is it just bore/stroke differences?
2) Can anyone define for me the different engine codes? Possibly a good addition to the newbie forum? It's all greek to me...
3) Did the 1.8 and 2.0 use the same trans and/or will the 2.0 bolt up to the current trans?
Fabrication doesn't scare me but I'd like to know what I am getting into.
Thanks for any help...
Scott
