OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

I have a 95 gs-t, It's bone stock. I am having heating problems with my car, The temperature gauge goes almost to the top then drop half way, then back up again, it constantly goes back and forth. If I am at higher rpm's it does it less and stays more stable. The heater works after the temp gauge rises and falls back down. And has a musty smell when the heater initially works. Also when I am stopped the heater starts to blow cold air until i begin moving again. Any suggestions or info needed?

Thanks

Help like I said I just replaced my 14b, with a newer 14b. Everythng was going fine but everytime I turned the car off I heard a loud bubbling sound in the coolent tubes (kinda sounded like a bong hit) My car has died 3 times while driving from over heating now! (I just did the swap today) Was I supposed to re-fill any fluids after i changed the turbo? I did the oil but that was it, and I still have a lot of Coolent in my overflow up tank. Please HELP!!!

I also had the defrost set on HIGH, and hot output, and I was not getting any hot air. My dad suggested its the thermostat...is that right?

It might be, you are positive this turbo is the same turbo as the one that was in the car orignally? and was your boost modified? too high of boost might cause that.

Could be the thermostat, but I have my money on a coolant leak or an air bubble. As long as your refilled the coolant with the car running, cap off, you shouldn't have an air bubble (our cars aren't too prone to it in my experience). If you didn't get a coolant fitting tight, you are loosing coolant until it gets low enough that you overheat. Perhaps the one right on the turbo so it turns to steam and you never even see a puddle.

Get this taken care of quickly! An overheating engine is one of the quickest ways to kill an engine. Running it out of oil is another.

Yup its a 14b, same turbo.

HAHA holy crap, why would you know what that sounded like??

haha wansnt me.

The ONLY Fluid I replaced was the OIl, I never took off the radiator so I felt no need to mess with the coolent, was there something else i needed to refill?? Like I said, its overheating (till the point of shutdown) Bubling in the coolentlines espicially after i turn it off, and steam is flying out of the "Do not Remove" Radiator Cap.

Buck:
Pull the radiator (4 easy bolts, 2 easy clamps, 2 electrical connectors) & have at it - mostly clamps here & there - including the one that holds the turbo on - it's not a bad job by DSM standards IMO.

KDOGG
You dont have to pull the radiator although it will make it easier. Disconnect all lines that run to the turbo, take off the heatshields and downpipe, disconnect the o2 sensor, unbolt the turbo from the manifold (3 bolts, 1 nut) and drop it out the bottom. There may be a few other smaller things, but they should be pretty obvious. Just reverse to install.

Cool its out, pretty easy really. No I jsut got to put the new one in, hopeit isnt to hard. Oh What fluids do I need to replace the nwent poruing out of the turbo? Just the Engine oil?

Oil and refill your Radiator.
you should of drained you fluids first actually,am sure the oil and coolant was spilling everywhere and u were runnin for a bucket to put it in

click on that and go to turbo, that should help u out

Dude - lot's of guys(see above) have taken the time to try & help you on this thread & the other thread - I hope you haven't cooked your head gasket or warped your head due to your failure to listen.

- Remember - a hard head makes for a soft ass.

Yup call it hard headedness on my part...I was just ignoring the posts about coolent because I diddnt remove the radiator. And I dont know a whole lot about turbos (this is my 3rd day owning the car)...well now I got it, just had to re-fill the radiator...I had just NEVER seen coolent that color. Oh well thanks!

I'm not trying to be mean dude but these things are freaking hand grenades waiting for you to pull one of the 50 freaking pins scattered ALL OVER the sum#####es - you must be careful or you will pay dearly.

try a new thermostat first off, or like he said could be your water pump, or maybe a heater leak? thermostat first though

yeah, just rip it out of your car, take it into the house, use your old ladies crappy pans, put some water into it, turn up the burner and see if itopens or not, if it opens up just as you see bubbles on the botton of the pan and its not boiling, its fine, if not, remove the water pump, but your getting a musty smell which is from the coolant. 2 bolts for the thermostat and boom, answeres your worries.

ok the first time it overheated - fans stopped coming on by themself
fixed by rigging it to my ignition ok then from overheating it that time my thermo went (2pieces) replaced that and now it will idle at normal temp forever then after driving it for about 5-10 mins it will overheat could the next thing be my water pump I started it cold took off my rad cap and gave it a few revs and it looks like it flowing pretty good and its not leaking or loosing any coolant what the hell could it be , maybe the temp my new thermo opens at? if anyone has any ideas please help me I hate driving my beater cavalier

is your coolant boiling in your overflow tank? because if so it could be your head gasket, I had/still have an overheating problem myself, the only things left for me are the water pump and head gasket, I replaced my theormostat, both upper and lower radiator hoses(replace both of those before the head gasket any day, they could be caving in under high pressure)I replaced the radiator itself, in short everything outside of the engine and mine still overheats, which leads me to believe mine is the water pump(I know its the water pump in fact, but while I have the timing belt and stuff off I'm going to replace the head gasket anyway)oh, and even new thermostats are sometimes bad, it seems whenever I buy a new thermostat, half the time its bad, take it out completely to test and see if it still happens, to test, anyway, hope that helps

Test: Drive for about 10 minutes or until the temp gauge is high. Shut off and pop the hood and feel the upper and lower radiator hoses as well as the radiator coil fins. Do they all feel hot? Does the heater blow nice hot air? Is the coolant shooting into the coolant reservoir? Does the coolant get sucked back in when the engine cools down? Does the engine perform strong and healthy? Is there white smoke coming from the tail pipe?
Try temporarily removing the thermostat altogether... Still overheating?
Write back with ALL your answers so that we can help.

ya i was driving and heard a kliking soiund then tem,p went to max

and now me and my dad are trying to get the water pumo out

any help?

yes to all but no smoke and I already tried no thermo at all usually I can always figure it out but it just keeps comin back for more any other suggestions?

am i the only one who finds this extremely confusing? i'm at a loss. and you say you're not losing ANY coolant whatsoever? is your radiator cap sealing properly?

My car was overheating at various times, after getting off the freeway, when idling in hot weather, etc. I could however turn on the air conditioning and the auxiliary fan would immediately cool down the engine. I replaced the thermostat twice, replaced the radiator because the top hose blew off twice while the car was sitting in the garage. The first time the hose blew off I replaced the factory clamp with one of the spiral types. The second time it cracked off a piece of the lip around the pipe on the radiator, so I had to replace the radiator.

Not long after that I got a tiny little pinhole spray leak in the lower hose going to the turbo cooling line. Not sure if it is the inlet or outlet, but it was the lower straight hose. Anyway, I figured I should replace both hoses. Satan wanted $41.00 for the bottom hose kit and $54 for the top hose kit (which included the metal lines, clamps and hoses going from the turbo to the connections below the thermostat housing).

To make a very long story short, I got the top “form bent hose” only from Napa (part number, belts/hose EC/R-10030) for about $8.00 and there was enough extra hose on one end to make the second lower straight hose. My car has not overheated since replacing these two little hoses. Being the original owner of the car I know these two little hoses had not been replaced in 10 years. The lower hose was very soft and I believe it may have been collapsing restricting coolant flow to the turbo and causing the overheating. Hope this helps!

John

well I tried every thing else so I decided to pull out my rad and flush it guess what I found ..........the rest of my thermostat ! oh the relief I did not want to do the w/p changed the lower hose (upper was already replaced) and im back to normal. thanks guys I never would of thought that little pos would cause so much problems.

My 95 Eclipse GS keeps overheating and it cant idle without overheating.
-My guess is the water pump is rusted cuz i've been running on water for 1-2 week. do i need new water pump?
-How can i check if its running alryte and something else is wrong, not the water pump?
-Can my heat sensor be faulty?
-Also that my temperature indicator jumps from hot to cold once in awhile. would intercooling solve my overheating problem?
-I need your opinion cuz i'm new in this :dsm: things, should the problem be fixed with a rust removal, or a new waterpump or should i get a new cooling system or even an intercooler?

to check if you waterpump is gone. take off the radiator cap and let the car run, if you see water flowing then all is good with the water pump.
if the water pump is ok then check to see if the fans are working. let it keep running and see if the fans come on, if not turn on your AC and see if that turns on the fans. if the fans come on with the AC then the censor is shot if they don't come on at all then the fans could be shot.
