OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

I am out of options- the leak down test came back negative as did the block test. I have a huge expensive puller fan on my setup now along with the stock fan on the non a/c side. The fans run all the time via dsmlink. I have a new radiator and new hoses, new radiator cap. The car still has the same symptoms, it's fine on the highway- even if i punish it. As soon as it gets back down to regular cruising or idling once I get off the highway. It starts heating up again. The only thing that I can think of now is my aluminum overflow tank.

New thermostat (second one), and yes- the dreaded huge ssac fmic.

This is the one I have:

eBay

could this be causing my problems?

thanks
meek

Based on the number of people that successfully run pop bottles and (like myself) no overflow tank at all, I feel pretty safe saying no, that's not your problem.

Could your IC be getting in the way of your radiator? I've heard of that being a common problem. T-Stat good? No kinks in your coolant lines?

Sounds like your fans are fighting one another. Are they both blowing from the front of the car toward the rear, or is one wired backward?

Cooling systems no longer -since the eighties- run with a half-inch of airspace in the top of the radiator. An expansion tank is absolutely necessary. Its design is of almost no importance, but it should be not too far below the level of the radiator (just go by where stock tanks are located on various cars).

I will go and get another expansion tank- right now- mine is mounted way below radiator line. Perhaps that is the issue. Both fans are wires as pullers in stock location.

I just recently installed my Punishment racing radiator that came with 2 slim-line fans. Unfortunately with my intercooler piping setup 1 of the fans wont fit, so at the moment im only running one fan. Ive seen some people with the same setup and was wondering how they are not overheating. I was driving around the city today to get my car tinted, and it made it about 3/4 of the way down the gauge. Anybody have any recommendations? I was thinking of maybe doing a pull type fan for the other side of the AC condenser.

Whens the last time you replaced the thermostat? Did you get all the air out of the coolant system when you swapped the radiator?

Im pretty sure the thermostat has never been changed. And when we installed the radiator, we filled the system back up and left the cap open with the car running for a little bit to make sure there was no air bubbles left...is that was your asking?

Yes, I would try changing the thermostat and see if that help. It wouldnt hurt to change it anyways and there under $10.

The car only runs on one fan, the second one only comes on when the a/c is turned on. I had a similar problem and wired both fans together so they both turn on and off at the same time. But I wouldnt think that it running on one fan would cause it to overheat that much. Are you sure the fan is running properly and flowing the correct direction?

The slim-line fan that they include with the radiator are push type fans, so im positive its in the correct spot. I was thinking of maybe doing a coolant flush and getting some good coolant and maybe some water wetter.

I think what im going to end up doing is removing the AC condenser because were not using AC for this car and end up putting a pull type fan on the other side of the radiator.

I might be wrong but I think you seem confused about how the fan should be setup.

You can't have a fan in front of the radiator (between the radiator and front bumper) as a puller.

Puller fans go between the radiator and engine (so behind the radiator).

Pusher fans go between the radiator and front bumper (so in front of the radiator).

:cry:okay i will start from the beginning. I recieved my car(91 Eagle Talon TSi FWD) from a buddy who said it just died on him on the highway. he took it to his mechanic and they told him it was a bad ECU. so he gave it to me. I inspected the car and upon removal of the timing cover, i found the Timing belt snapped. so i knew i was gonna need a new head. I bought a parts car that had less than 1000 miles on the rebuilt head, and installed it on my car. right on top of a Brand new Cometic three layer MLS Head Gasket. i torqued the head bolts down from the center outward to 72lbs in three even steps. it ran fine for about a week or two, then all of a sudden i started hearing a hiss from the front. the top of the plastic radiator was cracked and started leaking. i attempted a jbweld fix, but it slowly worked through that... then about a week ago, it got to the point where it was spraying real bad out the top of the radiator. so i replaced the radiator with another one i had from the parts car. as soon as it wasin there and i refilled the system, i started the car to try to push the air out of the system. as soon as it started i had a lot of pressure right at the thermostat housing!! lots of flow going through the system right there. upon doing some searching, i have found that that might be a symptom of a bad head gasket. something like the compression from the motor pushing antifreeze through the system. however i get no mixing in the coolant system of oil and no mixing of antifreeze in the crankcase. at least not on the the dipstick. so i moved on. havent done a compression test yet, but i will tomorrow. so i ran it for about fifteen minutes till the temp got to midline, the whole time the fluid was very active in the housing, and then the fans kicked on. it sucked a lot of fluid down, and i refilled the system. thought it was full. so i closed up the system, and filled the overflow bottle. then i went for a drive. i got about 2 miles down the road before she started heating up. i pulled over and i had a LOT of steam blowing through the overflow pipe. figured maybe my ratio was off... so i put a complete gallon of antifreeze in it and it took it!!! then i went driving again. got about a mile down the road and i heard a pop and spray. i blew the coolant bypass hose running from the the big pipe down to the oil cooler. so i bypassed the oil cooler temporarily, and filled it with as much water as she could hold. then i drove home. made it 90% of the way on the highway and then once i came to a stop light, she started heating up again. i had both fans going the whole time!!! so i brought it home, and left it overnight. today when i got off work, i bought a brand new thermostat, ten degrees cooler(185), gasket, new rad cap, and a gallon of antifreeze. when i got home, i drained the radiator from the petcock, pulled the lines from the heater core, and connected them together. then i replaced the thermostat and gasket, ran the oil cooler back in line with the coolant system, and refilled the entire system. it still gets a lot of pressure in the thermostat housing when the car runs, hope its not my head gasket. so i refilled the entire system, pushed out all the air i could by running the car and squeezing the hoses to force the air out of the top of the system. i then closed it up and let it run for a while. she ran good, no overheating, no problems, fans kicked on and i refilled the overflow bottle. no problems. i then went for a drive. i went maybe a mile, and for some reason, when i boost, i start warming up. so what could be causing my issue. when i stopped i had lots of steam blowing into the overflow tank u can hear it bubbling a LOT. SOMEONE HELP ME. why does it seem to be affected by me boosting? is this another symptom of a bad Head Gasket? please someone help me . send me PM or email me directly, or post here. my email address is [email protected] thanks everyone for listening to me ramble on. :dsm:

Do a compression test to see what that is. Any oil in your coolant or coolant in oil?

i am doing the compression test tomorrow. and no there is no mixing that i can see anywhere. drained the radiator like three times since this all started, and no oil, and no coolant in the under the rocker cover, and none on the dipstick... just good fresh oil!!!!

okay ran the compression check and it was 150 across the board. i replaced the radiator today with one from a buddies parts car, in hopes that it solves my issues, but it has a pinhole crack at the screw location for the fan, so i am gonna JB weld it tomorrow and let it sit for a day before i try to pressurize the system. so what could be causing the immense pressure i got inside the thermostat housing while the car is running??? i was filling it today and had the funnel wedged in the housing with water in it waiting for all the bubbles to go down, and i started the car, and antifreeze went spraying ALL over the engine... never really seen that except on bad headgasket issues, but maybe someone knows different!!! HELP ME PLEASE!

To bring it back from the dead- I think i may have found my overheating issues. My friggin (mishimoto aluminum) radiator was as the exhaust manifold when touching it yesterday. I'm guessing the issue is not running upper or lower heatshield. Any suggestion as to which it could be? Oh- it also killed my a/c slim fan.

when I change a thermostat I put a tylenol in the thermostat to hold it open to release air in the system. the tylenol will dissolve. Now when was the last time you did a timing belt? most people change the water pump while they are doing the timing belt.
