car idles for 4 secs. than just dies?

I got 96 TSI and the car has been sitting for a couple weeks and when I went to go start it, the battery was dead so I was like ok thats alright. I jump it and starts like usuall and I take it around the block and I drive it for like 5 mins. than while shifting to 2nd the car just turns off. Now the battery is still dead so I get another car to jump it and than we tried this 4 times and everytime we jump it starts like normal than idles for like 4 secs. than dies real fast. If I give it gas and hold it at like 2k rpms its fine but as soon as i let go. it idles for like a sec. than dies and it doesn't stutter it just dies like its shorting out somewhere. I'm clueless.

By would my alternator sound do that exactly, all the alternator does is charge the battery. I"m just confused, could you elaborate.

Ok, I took my car to Autozone today because the check engine light is on. They did their free computer reading and it comes back as "Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfirings Detected." The engine sounds kinda nasty, not screeching or anything, just "dry." (Crappy explanation, but I really can't describe it any other way.) And my coolant is leaking, so I have to constantly refill it every few weeks. I'm just looking for advice and possible problems and price of fixes from any of you who have had this problem or have vast knowledge of what could be wrong. Thanks for any help.

it's either the alternator not charging the battery, or the battery has bad cells and is not taking charge.

Take the battery and the alternator to get tested.

the alternator does more than just charge the battery when u start that car all the electricity is then used from the alternator instead of the battery. the reason its not dying when u rev it to 2k is becuz the maxium load of the alternator is abtained anywhere from 2k -2.5k. does your battery light go on when u are idling?

It's working fine now after I let it sit for day, but I was able to rev it up to whatever like 4-5k did'nt matter just after it settled at 800 it would die quickly after, it might be the dead cells in the battery.
