My car dies on idle and vibrates pretty bad after we replaced the timing belt.. what could be the cause of this? What's the worst thing that could've happened? Bent valves? The car was running perfectly before this... i hope the mechanic didn't mess the valves up.. this was his first time working on a 4g63 but has done timing belt jobs before.. is there anything special about our timing belt jobs?

If it's vibrating your teeth out the rear counterbalancer wasn't synchronized properly. Theres a 14 mm headed bolt which you remove and using a 1/4 diameter item like a screwdriver or such insert it and turn the rear balancer. When the screwdriver goes in further it's right. It takes 3 turns of the rear balancer to come out right. Actually when it's right you can turn the shaft loose and it will try to point to the pointer. Anywhere else it tries to point is wrong.

Dying at idle could be a tooth off. These things are tricky and it should be dealt with very carefully. Take it back and make him check it to see if the belt is installed properly. You will have to take the belt completely off to check the rear balance shaft.

Good Luck

dont let someone change something as important as the timing belt unless they have had experience do it on that particular car.

-Balance shafts out of alignment
-vibration can also be caused by the tensioner being set way to tight.
-make sure he properly installed the tensioner (compressed it properly i.e. didnt just put it in a vice and compress it but slowly pushed it in) if it hasnt the belt will not have proper tension applied to it.
