I just did the timing belt on my friends GVR4 and everything seemed to go smoothly, i followed the vfaq directions and triple checked the marks. Got it all together and it started right up and seemed to be fine. It idled at about 950 but i figured it was because it was cold.

I checked the timing and set it to 5 degrees btdc. We took it out for a spin and anything over 3k rpm it seems to cut out and not have any power. It will free rev no problem with no load on the engine too. I was checking today and couldnt find anything out of place. the idle stays at 950 too. I had removed the intake piping to get to the water neck too, and we swapped exhaust manifolds while doing the belt also because his was cracked.

So any ideas? Im hoping i didnt mess up the timing belt and its something much simpler.

heres a piece of advice,, with cars this old and picky,, do one thing at a time

because now it could be the install of the new exhaust manifold,, or a boost leak beacuse you took off the intercooler piping

-- id look at those two first -- see if theres any carbon build up around the exhaust manifold gasket

and then id do a boost leak test to see if everything is tight

if those two check out then you go after the timing belt to see whats up

alright after poking around i found that when i pit back on the turbo outlet pipe i got this bracket that shares the bolt under the pipe, causing it to sit crooked and cause a huge boost leak. Shes all good to go now and im glad that it wasnt related to the timing belt.
