Langley,
All of a sudden today, my tranny won't shift into reverse. It just happened for no apparent reason. Anyways, I tried adjusting the clutch pedal and shifter cables but nothing really changes. Just now I tried it again and I got it in with no grinding but it was pretty hard to do. All of my other gears work fine with no grinding at all.
When I adjusted the clutch pedal I turned the slave rod in, toward the engine, and made sure the pedal was disengaging all the way. Now the clutch feels longer and the engagment point is right near the top instead of half-way down like it was before. Not sure what has caused this problem. Is there anything else I can try before I take it into the mechanics? It is just annoying not being able to reverse.

And, when I did get it into gear just now it was really hard moving the shifter out as well. My guess is a bad TOB or cylinder. Finally, my clutch pedal pressure has been steadily getting weaker over the last couple months.

check the oil level in the tranny. sounds like its low. mine did the same thing before the tranny went out. i wound up haveing a cracked case and fluid spewed out. i lost 1st and it was hard to getin and out of gear. Do not drive it this way. you will get stranded. add oil and you should be okay. i never got reverse back though and wound up gettin a new trans

Check to see if the master and slave cylinders are leaking, pull back the boots and look for brake fluid. If so you will have to rebuild them or replace them. If not try bleeding the clutch maybe you have an air bubble in their somewhere. IS there any play in your pedal? It could be the notorious 1g pedal assembly, if so get ready for hours of hell getting that thing out of there. :sneaky:

Check the bracket that holds the shift cables to the trans. Should be two bolts.. Both of mine fell out and I couldn't get into reverse.. My bracket was just hanging and not even attached.

Worth a look.

my 2 bolts on teh trans came out also.... and now i got 1-5th back but still no reverse its really making me mad i live in albany,ny its kind of like a city so theres no spots to pull thru on unless i park like 10 minutes away from where i need to be... i did change my axle like 5 days ago and did refill the oil in my tranny but ill bring it to my mechanic in 2 days any other suggestions is there any way to adjust the shifter like on teh 1gs?

Try removing the reverse switch on the tranny. Look at the end near the threads, if it is messed up you can use a small round file to remove the burring around the inside of the ball rim. Clean it good with breakleen. Reinstall with an aluminum washer, make sure the tranny is in reverse when you install the switch. Sorry I don't have a part number for you, I used one from a gesket set I bought to rebuild my engine. This was my fix for a stiff shifting reverse. I hope yours is this easy too!!

Good Luck, Bill

ive had this problem before, have you been grinding 5th gear alot recently?? 5th/reverse gear syncronizers are grouped together, so if you have been grinding the hell out of 5th, the teeth on the syncronizer are prob really messed up, not allowing it to engage into reverse.

When this happened to me, i had to pull the trans apart and take a file to the teeth on the syncronizer so it would actually engage(poormans method) or ya might just replace the whole thing, your choice

yea i grinded it doing like 40 the same day it stopped working bah.... is this something a kid with some basic mechanic skills can do ? like do i need to drop my whole tranny or can i take the end case off ? and remove teh 36mm bolt?

ok so im bringing up the dead has anyone taken there tranny apart and fixed this situation? LOL cause if its just the end case illtake the tranny out and do it myself (i have very little experience ) but i have seen ti done and assisted so.... ill screw it up but ill be learning

i to sometimes have trouble putting the car in reverse, at times it goes in fine, other times the shifter wont go in all the way and pop out when i start backing up, but i have never grinded in 5th and my clutch system is in tip top shape...could i have somewhat of the same problem as hellraz0r1337
