Can't quite get new lug studs all the way in...

I'm working on my new 90 tsi awd talon today. :)

I've damaged a couple of lug studs from overtorquing, so now I'm in the process of replacing them. (Front hub btw) I can get them all but 2-3mm away from flush from the back of the hub.

I've been pulling them in using the stacked washers method -kinda. Instead of washers I'm using the box end of a couple wrenches. I'm also using a hammer to tap it in as I go while turning the ratchet to guage my progress. I'm starting to torque it pretty hard and hitting pretty hard with the hammer. I'm putting about 120 ft/lbs torque and I know it's only rated for 100. I've pretty well shredded the lug nut I'm using to pull it in.

Is this close enough? Should I just reassemble everything and retorque after a few miles? I've read as many posts as I can find on the matter and I don't think I'm missing any steps. Shop manual was pretty useless.

Thanks for any replies!

I used a two ton press to press them into the hub. It was faster and easier than the other methods. I would not leave them the way they are with the 2mm still left.

i would use a small bearing or small nut to drive it in, usually i use a impact gun to get in ,,,i have a electrical 18volt makita impact....remember the back of the stud has to be flush with the hub

Sounds like the 2-3mm leftovers from the stud is slighty bigger than what the hub will accept. Try a new one.

Yeah, definitley don't drive it like that. It could instantly snap causing a reaction to all the other studs and your wheel comes off while driving.

BTW, are you replacing the whole hub or just the studs?

Sounds like it may be easier to take the hub assembly to a shop to finish up. I just didn't want to drive into a shop for this job, they charge way too much.

BTW, are you replacing the whole hub or just the studs?

I hadn't considered replacing the whole hub, but it may not be a bad idea. I was hoping to stick with easy cheap fixes while it's cold out.

Thanks for the replies!

Pneumatic impact wrench with a 1/2" drive and 125 psi works great. I replaced a couple on the passenger side I snapped off removing the wheel while putting a supra ic in... I just slapped the wheel on, hung it off the good studs, stuck the new ones through, seated them all by hand, and hit it with the impact. They seated themselves. If you have to, you can torque them down and drive it to a nearby tire shop to have them impact it. I'd loosen them up again beforehand though. Relieve the tension a little, then let the impact pull them in, like tightening head bolts.

I've always just used a regular lug wrench on the lug nut to pull them in. Rechecked the torque after the car was on the ground and again after rolling it forward and back about 10-15 ft.

Are you sure you have the correct studs? It sounds like you're having way too much trouble for them to be the correct knurl size.

Get a torch. Heat the hub right around the hole. Then stick your cold ass stud in it. And it should go in easily.

My guess is that since it is freezing balls out there in Idaho, the hole is probably smaller than normal making it difficult to get it in. So to speak.
