cant believe I'm asking this - Rice Kit (err body kit) question

I'm not looking to do a full kit... There's nothing wrong with the sides and back of my car... other than some nice stock replacements might be in need.

I'm debating between going with a 2gb front bumper (then I'd have to replace my headlights... and I actually like the ones I just bought), or aftermarket which doesn't scream rice boy, to try and stay close to the stock lines but be able to use my lights and such.

I ran across this one, and from the picture it look ok... but how does it look in person?!? has anyone seen this in person or have it? its the Bay Speed Aero BD2 style. I think with that lip taken off, and maybe some fiberglass work smoothing out those useless vents by the wheels would give me close to what I'm looking for. My biggest problem with this one is it's made of fiberglass, and me having shitty depth perception in small spaces (i.e. parking spots), could turn out bad.

I can do the fiberglass work and fitment myself, so it would only cost me materials (and since my dad works plastics and tooling, I can get their cost), The bumper alone is about $140, I could probably have it looking how I was with less than $100 in materials, with paint it would probably cost me about the same as getting a new bumper from mitsu... then I'd have to get lights too.

Never seen it in person, but it looks pretty good. Really not that much different than stock, since you can have the look you want for relatively cheap I would say go for it!

Wow, the fact that you took all the time to flame two members is degrading enough to DSM's. Everyone on this website has a thing about cars, whether it be go fast parts or show. Im tired of seeing people insulted for having a style and vision of there own. One mans trash is another mans treasure, at the end I respect anyone who does something they seek out to do and actually get it done. Whether it be a 10 sec car or a Body Kit makeover.

I think the front bumper might look nice if taken the time to be done correctly. Just put up some pictures of the progress, i would like to see.

To the OP. I'm not saying that the body kit is ugly or anything, but I went through a "body kit" phase. I have a body kit sitting in my storage unit (The Sarona Body Kit...something like 1000 dollars) that I have no intention of putting on. I wish I could have spent that on other things to be honest. Once I started modding my engine...and felt the difference in performance I caught the bug. Since then its been all performance mods for me!

Best of luck with the direction you plan on taking with your car!

I recommend you get a duraflex bumper so you would have to worry about it cracking when you bump a curb.

Not a bad bumper a few years ago I would have gone with a similar bumper. Even put a urethane blitz bumper on my sisters 95 talon a few years back. It looked good I had the mirrors and boomerang painted to match the the main body color.

It was allot cheaper for the blitz bumper than getting an OEM replacement at the time. Today I would want it to have a bigger opening up front for my intercooler.

So what your saying is, you hate anything appearance wise that's not stock? do you have rims bigger than stock? Tint? Anything that enhances the appearance even a little?

I'm not going to get butt hurt over what your thoughts on things, I don't own the kit, I don't even want the whole kit... But the front bumper looks like it could be made into something decent, as jeff92gs shopped.

I have the same hatred toward riced out cars, but theres a huge difference between going extremely mild and going all out. I wouldn't consider what I have in mind rice. I want something slightly more aggressive with clean lines... I can't tell by a picture, so that's why I asked if anyones seen it in person.

I wouldn't call it a phase, I just really really really REALLY hate the 2ga front bumpers.... they remind me of a kia or something. The only appearance "mod" i have in mind is changing that thing out to either something close to stock or a 2gb stock... however, I don't want to change my headlight housings, so that's why I'm looking at the aftermarket side of things first.

I know urethane would be ideal, but if i were actually able to find this thing in urethane, i wouldn't be able to use fiberglass to make it how i want, unfortunately fiberglass doesn't stick to plastic very well, over time it ALWAYS delaminates. but I know exactly what you're saying about urethane vs fiberglass, .

to OP bumper looks good it doesn't look over kill like most Ricer kits. it seems to almost be a slight tweek of the OEM style *which I like as well* pretty nice and looks like it would flow pretty well but also since you do have a fabbing shop you might be able to create a 2Gb front bumper that would fit your 2Ga lights

Why not a lip for the 2ga bumper? Check out my gallery if you want an idea of what a lip looks like on the 2ga. Its only like 90 dollars on the eBay, and its a urethane part, so you won't have to worry about it cracking. You also wouldn't have to worry about spending a bunch to get a fiberglass bumper to fit like OEM. Best part -- nobody ever rocks the 2ga bumper.

Not sure but last time I checked . I didn't buy my car to get laid or to pick up chicks . I already had a girlfriend when I bought my car and started to work on it . I bought it for the sheer fact I have always wanted a dsm and I love driving it . This is a site about people who love the same make of cars . I think a 2g DSM with a nice lip kit, Wheels, Suspension, Tires, Front Mount, Big Turbo is god!

I have to say this is the first thread with the most response to my Anti-Rice antics! I'm proud I got under soo many people's skin! I hate Rice, I'm not the only one. However don't get your panties in a twist children. Its a web forum. I own a Black 97 GSX with very rare and expensive wheels, Built suspension and its being restored and I get the same hate mail. It does absolutely no good to immediately denounce a member strictly because he wants to be different. Express your opinion with your own car, and let them do the same with theirs, AND if you disagree with it- tough luck, its not your car.

If the OP wants to do a body kit, please do, but don't half ass like I said. There are ways to avoid the rice/body kit classification, and that is by doing it cleaning.

Hell, you can slap on an eBay turbo, chop the springs to lower it, mount a crooked intercooler, and have a busted paint job and under the definition in the above post, the car wouldn't be rice. How does that work? There are stock bodied DSM's that fall under the category of rice, and there are kitted DSM's that are done right, that don't look rice.

The word "rice" gets used in the wrong context sometimes, its almost like a catch 22. Don't throw the word "rice" until you see what gets done to it, if the kit is unmatched, doesn't fit, and is busted then by all means consider it rice.

But I bet I can find a few examples in the Gallery of stock bodied DSM's with painted stock wheels that would probably satisfy the "rice" persona.
